Deployment Best Practice: Start managing new technologies

New technology is great, but how to handle it? You have to gain new skills. And where to find the required information? There is an overwhelming number of repositories to search. Let’s take SAP HANA as an example: If you search for HANA in the SAP Community Network, you will get more than 20.000 results (discussions, blogs, Wikis, …), and more material is available in other repositories like SAP.com, SAP HANA Academy, SAP Help Portal, … So
where do you start?

Let’s assume your manager has just learned about SAP HANA and asks you to investigate if it would be useful for your company, but you haven’t yet had a chance to find out much about the SAP In-Memory Computing technology. You will easily find marketing material explaining all the benefits, but you will also need answers to questions like: How well will SAP HANA fit into our existing architecture? How do we transfer parts of our existing solution to SAP HANA? Which considerations are important for SAP HANA operations? Fortunately, the same questions have already been answered by many customers in their own SAP HANA projects, so why not benefit from these experiences?

SAP Active Global Support is aware of the importance of knowledge, and many of my colleagues have been involved in customer projects. They collected experiences and created best practices out of them. These best practices have been published in the SAP Enterprise Support Academy at http://support.sap.com/dbp4hana (log-in required). The first version has been available since September 2013. It has been used already more than 100.000 times, within the first six months. An updated version has just been published recently, to reflect the latest developments and experiences.

What’s in it?

Let’s take a closer look at the content of the Deployment Best Practice for SAP HANA. It
is structured into five sections:

  • Fundamentals: The fundamentals section of Deployment Best Practice for SAP HANA provides essential information on how to use SAP HANA and applications deployed on it. This includes an introduction of SAP HANA technical fundamentals, information on SAP HANA supportability, a brief overviews of SAP Business Suite powered by SAP HANA, and using SAP HANA for business intelligence.
  • Architecture: In this section, you can learn about architectural aspects: How to estimate size? How to define the technical infrastructure? How to set up the non-productive landscape? How will data be provided to SAP Data? How can users access data in SAP HANA? What are best practices for SAP HANA development?
  • Transition: This section discusses the transfer of existing solutions (in most cases still on traditional databases) to enhanced versions based on SAP HANA: Migration vs. Green field; SAP Rapid Prototyping; one-step migration; in-memory optimized functions; custom code optimization; data model optimization; test management; data volume management; and supportability setup.
  • Operations: After you have moved your business application to SAP HANA, the IT organization has to continue to run the solution without disruption. To do so, you have to integrate SAP HANA into a holistic operations concept, covering both traditional and new technologies. The best practices and procedures in this section of Deployment Best Practice for SAP HANA explain the most important aspects of operations for SAP HANA-based applications: Run SAP Like a Factory; monitoring; root-cause analysis; administration; change control; and security
  • Expert Guidance: This section refers to additional expert guidance that is available to you in the SAP Enterprise Support Academy Learning Studio.
