This blog explains the simplified procedure that will no longer require to download and mount DVDs. It is available for dedicated SUM scenarios.

Overview

The Software Update Manager (SUM) is the tool for updating, upgrading, or converting SAP systems [Software Update Manager (SUM): introducing the tool for software maintenance]. During a system upgrade or a conversion to SAP S/4HANA, the tool asks for DVDs that have to be mounted on the host on which the tool is executed. Sometimes it is a sophisticated task to find the proper DVDs. The new approach will instead put the software archives (from the DVD packages) into the download folder prior to starting the SUM tool, so that you do not have to wonder which DVDs to download and mount.

New Approach

You are planning a system conversion to SAP S/4HANA in the Maintenance Planner [Maintenance Planner]. As a result, the Maintenance Planner will provide the stack.xml to be downloaded, and it will put required software archives to the download basket, including the software that was previously part of the DVDs.

Note that this approach is available for the scenario of a system conversion with target SAP S/4HANA on premise. Further scenarios will follow (also for scenarios for the SAP Business Suite), but existing scenarios will not be switched.

Note

  • Some database relevant files (for example ORAClient, HDBClient) needs to be downloaded separately as done before

  • You will have to consider the share for the software archives to be appropriate for the additional amount of data
