This blog is the second part of my summary about the SAP Solution Manager Road Map webinar with Evan Stoddard. You can read the first part here: http://scn.sap.com/community/it-management/alm/solution-manager/blog/2013/04/03/my-summary-of-sap-so...

In this blog I will mention some planned innovations on Application Operations and Business Process Operations, part of Run SAP like a factory.

According to Evan, Solution Manager will cover the entire end-to-end customer solution, including SAP’s latest product innovations, for performance and availability monitoring with auto-refresh displays, for technical administration and optimization activities. Something very interesting that he mentioned is that there will be an unified infrastructure between end-to-end monitoring, alerting monitoring and business process monitoring to avoid redundancy in configuration and optimize data retrieval. It will be possible to have configuration driven by business process view or by technical view, with identical underlying infrastructure.

Some more details of the innovations in the monitoring and alerting area:

  • continuos improvements on support for SAP HANA, mobility and cloud
  • guided procedures
  • offline robots for end user experience monitoring
  • exception management
  • unified job monitoring approach for ABAP-based as well as non-ABAP-based jobs
  • enhancement of landscape management and application operations for non-SAP components and customer specific components. It will be possible for instance to monitor SAP Business Planning and Consolidation (BPC).
  • dedicated message flow monitoring application (integration visibility) including alerting integration
  • enhance interface channel monitoring with further interface types as IDoc and qRFC

Business Intelligence monitoring will integrate BWA and Data Services in BI monitoring and alerting, and provide technical reporting and management dashboards for BI monitoring:

Message flow monitoring will be able to hide the complexity of different integration layers and provide a business user friendly integration visibility into correct closure of Business to Business and Application to Application conversations.

For Root Cause Analysis, there will be integration of mobile offline scenarios based on SAP Sybase unwired platform and Sybase Afaria in end-to-end root cause.

Configuration validation will be improved with an alternative more column focused reports and will provide weighted compliance reporting, while Configuration Change Database will have the housekeeping for active configuration stores improved.

Technical and Management reporting will also be improved. Technical reporting will have capabilities for service availability management and additional content based on newly instrumented system types as SAP mobile or SAP in-memory. In the dashboards area, there will be a dashboard framework including capability for customers to create and enhance their own dashboards, balanced scorecard framework and dashboard framework as mobile application.

Service Availability Management has many planned innovations. The idea is that Solution Manager will be a single source of truth for service availability management. It will allow maintenance of agreed service times, adjust and categorize measured service outages, use data from work mode management and technical monitoring and provide reporting capabilities on service outages. The next two slides show some of the planned innovations:

Data Volume Management (DVM), which helps to manage and control data growth and data reduction measures in the landscape, will have guided procedures for complex DVM Project tasks such as document archiving requirements based on a SAP checklist, and how to clean up archiving backlog due to data quality issues. Feature Decision Maker will be integrated as guided procedure. Business objects will be integrated into DVM hierarchy views in a functional area called Business object footprint.  IT Planning Dashboards will provide landscape-wide status on global strategy fulfillment. Other two innovations are the automatic proposal for DVM activities to solve performance issues in business critical solutions and reporting on improvements after measures have been implemented.

All the DVM functionalities can be accessed from its Work Center (if you are upgrading from SolMan 7.0 to 7.1, notice that you won’t find DVM as part of Business Process Operations Work Center as it was in 7.0):

In the slides below you can see the overview of the planned innovations for Business Process Operations.
