Arbejdsglæde is a Danish word that literally means “work gladness.” Arbejde means work and glæde means happiness, so arbejdsglæde is "happiness at work."
Not a common phrase we hear in the U.S., right?
Arbejdsglæde came to mind when I registered my three daughters for SAP’s annual event, “Take Your Child to Work Day.” It has always been an exciting bonding moment for the parents in our team to alert each other when the event registration link is activated, as this is one event which we look forward to every year.
Take Your Child to Work Day means spending a nice summer day with your kids while showing them where we disappear to every day. It gives us the opportunity to explain to them how we contribute to improving people’s lives and how they can do the same. I didn’t realize the impact of this special day until my 8-year old approached me during the weekend while I was doing some catch-up work and said, “Sorry you didn’t get to work much last Friday but THANK YOU for spending the day with us at your work.”
Since my parents live with us now, I extended the invitation to them which still falls under the theme, “Take Your Child (that’s ME!) to Work Day.” Aside from asking them to watch the kids while watching the feature film of the day, Frozen, they had a great time seeing how SAP takes good care of us.
Having my family at work, I realized I literally had my sources of “happiness at work.”
SAP Silicon Valley (SAPsv) has lined up a lot of events for us this year and I plan to support them as much as my schedule allows.
The multiple project deadlines and the hundreds of emails to be answered might never go away, but it is truly up to us to find our own happiness at work. Happy to share that I have found my Arbejdsglæde. See you at the SAPsv Family Summer Picnic in August!
