While my software engineering education and experience, long time ago!, keep me curious about new software innovation, I will simply leave the technical description of this great innovation to my colleagues at SUSE engineering and product management (check links below). Following are some questions and answers:

What innovation and who is behind it?

On January 31, 2014 the announcement "SUSE Develops kGraft for Live Patching of Linux Kernel" introduced the software innovation and according to Vojtech Pavlik, Director of SUSE Labs, enterprise Linux users are eagerly awaiting an offering of this type which will enhance uptime in mission-critical environments.

What is the scope and availability?

Vojtech's blog "kGraft: Live Kernel Patching" explains the scope and technology. Vojtech also states "We plan a first kGraft release in March 2014, under GPLv3 for parts that touch GCC and GPLv2 for Linux kernel parts, and we aim at getting it merged fully into the upstream projects."

What are the benefits for SAP customers?

Matthias G. Eckermann, Senior Product Manager SUSE Linux Enterprise Server, outline four customer use cases in his blog "Do We Need “kGraft” at All?"

  1. In Memory Databases
  2. Simulations
  3. Infrastructure Building Blocks

What do you think? Do you have questions?

SUSE would value your thoughts and questions and I am happy to post a follow-up blog addressing your questions by Vojtech and Matthias.
