“SUSE, Welcome to the Cloud Foundry Foundation”

“I’m delighted that SUSE has now joined the Cloud Foundry Foundation. In close cooperation, we will further develop the OpenStack Cloud Provider Interface (CPI).” With these words, Dr. Jürgen Kreuziger, SAP Senior Vice President Cloud and Lifecycle Management, introduced the latest milestone of the partnership between the two companies at SUSECon 2015. Shortly before, SUSE had announced that it was joining the Cloud Foundry, a project for open PaaS (Platform-as-a-Service) offerings.

Traditional Leading Role

In his keynote speech at the SUSE user conference in Amsterdam, Jürgen Kreuziger spoke about key trends in the longstanding partnership. As the leading platform for SAP solutions for Linux and the recommended and supported operating system for HANA, SUSE Linux Enterprise has traditionally played a leading role in the SAP environment. This will also continue in the future if the trend moves strongly in the direction of cloud computing, as Jürgen Kreuziger assured.

Crucial for this is the open source movement, in which both SAP and SUSE are strongly involved. Since 2014, SAP has supported the Cloud Foundry Project for an open PaaS solution and the initiative of the OpenStack foundation for an open laaS (Infrastructure-as-a-Service) solution. SAP also uses both solutions for its own platform to enable users to benefit from the advantages of an open architecture for cloud computing.

Strong Partner from OpenStack Movement

Already in 2012, SUSE joined the OpenStack Foundation as the first Linux distributor, and in the same year, introduced the first OpenStack Enterprise Product under the name SUSE Cloud. Today, the OpenStack-based administration and orchestration solution from SUSE is firmly established in the market and in increased demand also in the SAP environment.  “With SUSE, the Cloud Foundry has a strong partner from the OpenStack movement,” emphasized Jürgen Kreuziger. “By integrating these two worlds even more closely in the future, we could deliver a number of advantages to the entire OpenSource movement.”

A central role is played here by the CPI project, which aims to simplify communication between Cloud Foundry and the underlying OpenStack infrastructure.  SAP is managing development of the interface, with SUSE involved as an OpenStack specialist. The interface is responsible for making it easier to test applications and roll out the applications in private or public clouds. An important project in this context is the HANA Cloud Platform, which forms the basis for SAP cloud solutions.
