# Data Geek Challenge : The Cause and Effect of Increase in Motor Vehicles

With the excitement of Data Geek challenge and by seeing a lot of blogs about SAP LUMIRA on SCN I made up my mind to post one , but choosing the topic was a difficult task . Recently after becoming an owner of a 2 wheeler vehicle I got interest to blog in the field of motor vehicles. So I made this simple analysis using LUMIRA.

To start off I began collecting data from http://data.gov.in and http://databank.worldbank.org/data/home.aspx

Then I came up with a structure for the blog as :

1. Analyzing the Increase in number of motor vehicles

2. Cause of this increase.

3. Effect of this increase.

First I visualized the state wise increase in number of motor vehicles in India within a span of 10 years(2001-2011) using 2D Column chart

and within a span of 5 years using a 3D column chart as below

I can also compare the states based on number of vehicles easily with the help of Geo Bubble Chart as shown

Now I thought about the cause of this increase in number of motor vehicles. The first thing which came to my mind is Increase in the population, although there are various other factors. So as soon as I got the data on adult population I began to visualize it against the motor vehicles.  I did this using the Line charts

I found the above chart very interesting because the increase in both the indicators i.e, adult population and number of vehicles seemed to be same. So I visualized it in a more detailed way by removing the Year from the X-axis in the Dimensions section and placed it in Legend Color field. After doing this I was surprised to see the chart as below where all the lines are parallel to each other

Now its time to think about the effect of this increase in motor vehicles. Apart from the luxury we get two things which are worth considering they are

1. Emissions from the vehicles

After collecting the data for the CO2 emissions I was searching for some representation other than what i used until now. Then i found this cool chart called Radar Chart which is shown below.

The good thing to observe in the above chart is that the gap between the number of vehicles and CO2 emissions has decreased in 2010 when compared to 2001. But the actual amount of CO2 emissions increased significantly from 2001 to 2010

Next is the number of road accidents. I found that better to visualize using a simple column chart as below for years 2001 and 2010

A very good thing to observe in the above chart is that in the year 2001 the number of accidents are almost 75% of number of vehicles. Whereas in 2010 the number of accidents are very much less than 50% of the number of vehicles also just little more than the accidents in 2001.

I also analyzed state wise road accidents as shown below using a different chart called the Tag cloud where the visualization of the data is very clear and easily understandable.

Finally to conclude this blog all I can say is that the effort put for this analysis is to make the reader understand the effects of increase in motor vehicles and think up a solution to reduce the emissions and save the environment as well as reduce the road accidents to the least possible as ones' life is very important .

Also Thank you for finding time to read this
