Step 1. I have accepted the challenge.

Step 4My Data Story

I have used the Sample data

Analysis of the Olympics medal tally

Back Ground :Olympics as we know is foremost sports competition with more than 200 countries participating. As I had enough data in the form of Data samples I thought of analyzing India’s performance in Olympics.

Technical Details :

Software Used  : SAP Lumira

Version Used    :1.18.0

Build                    :1095

Data set Used   :Olympics Data

Preparation Phase

My Sample Data:

Necessary Data corrections are done and unnecessary columns are removed just to make the analysis more clear.

Visualize

  1. Medal Count by Host country.

Chart Builder Option : Geo choropleth chart option in Geographic charts

Use : To depict the geographical pattern distribution of Olympic medals across the host countries

Observation :India's Contribution is not in the top list.

2. Medal Count Vs Country Description

Chart Builder Option : Donut Chart option in Pie charts

Use : Easy to identify the medal count distribution across individual countries and helps to identify country wise standings.

Observation :India is having 178 medal counts.

3. Medal Count by sport Vs Country

Chart Builder Option : Tables option in Table.Filter option on country Description really comes handy here.

Use : Depict the sports wise medal count. Helps to identify our core strength games.

Observation : Hockey tops the list with 169 medals and need more attention to sports like Tennis & Weight lifting.

Now I want to know the details of athletes who have toiled hard to get it done.

4.Medal Count by Athlete

Chart Builder Option : Funnel Chart option in Other Charts.Filter option on country Description really comes handy here.

Use : Depict the medal claimed by each Indian individual athlete participated in the event.Helps to identify the top performers from India in Olympics

Observation : Top Contributor is having an individual tally of 4 as the best which is quite average when compared to other countries.

From the performers I wanted to identify the performance of Men and women separately to identify the pitfalls.

5.Medal Count across various Countries based on gender

Chart Builder Option : Pie chart options in Pie chart

Use : Identify the gender wise distribution of medals.

Observation : Indian Women is contributing only 0.56% of overall medal tally.

This is a serious matter which we need to consider and need more training and related facilities for bettering the women’s performance in Olympics.

Findings

  1. Performance of Indian Women needs to be raised by providing them more training and enough exposure.
  2. India’s overall performance can be improved by concentrating on more games as currently we have only 7 medal winning sports.
