Hi all!
While browsing through databases I came across datasets that claims to have recorded all the data about airplane crashes in period 1908-2009. Being passionate about traveling, I decided to use Lumira and ran some simple analysis and tell “Lumira airplane crashes story”.
1. Number of airplane crashes per year
Graph below shows that number of airplane crashes per year in time period 1908-2009, did not exceeded milestone of 100 airplane crashes per year. The most airplane crashes happened in year 1972 (86 airplane crashes).
In top 5 years by number of airplane crashes also belong 1968 (with 83 airplane crashes), 1967 and 1989 (both with 79 airplane crashes), and 1970 (with 78 airplane crashes). In last past years (from 2003 on) number of crashes fall below 60 crashes per year.
Drilling down year 1972 data, it shows that the highest number was in second quarter (28 airplane crashes).
2. Number of fatalities per year
Again, year 1972 is the year with the highest number on the graph (2973 fatalities). But, the highest number of fatalities was in last quarter of the year and not in the second, when the most airplane crashes happened.
3. % of survivors (%) per flight
Honestly, used data were a little bit messy, so in order to found out % of survivors at individual flight, I add a column with numbers from 1 to 5268, by which is “1” first flight in dataset and “5268” last flight in dataset.
Graph below shows that in 56 airplane crashes all of the passengers and crew members survived. Drilling down, we can get more information about individual airplane accident. Accident nr. 109, for example, happened at October 21, 1926. The operator was Imperial Airways, and aboard was 12 passengers and crew members. Additional summary: “The plane was on a flight from London to Paris when power was lost to the starboard engine. The aircraft began to lose altitude until it eventually ditched into the sea about 18 miles from the English coast. The plane stayed afloat long enough for the fishing boat Invicta, piloted by Captain Marshall, to rescue all aboard”.
Accident nr. 5246 happened at January 15, 2009. The operator was US Airways, and on plane was 155 passengers and crew members. Summary: “The plane was taking off from La Guardia Airport when possibly, both engines were disabled after striking a flock of geese. The crew was able to ditch the plane in the Hudson River, making a soft landing. All 150 passengers and crew of 5 made it out safely before the plane began to sink. No one was reported to be seriously injured.”
4. Number of fatalities on the ground per year
Number of fatalities on the ground isquite low and does not exceeded 300. Then in 2001 it raised abnormally because of the terrorist attacts on September 11th.
5. Numbers of total fatalities
The number of total fatalities was the highest in 2001 (7039 fatalities), on the second place is year 1972 (2967 fatalities) and on the third place is 1985 (2671). In last past year (from 2005 on) the number of total fatalities decreased.
6. Number of airplane crashes by the operator
Graph show number of airplane crashes by operator. On the first place by the number of airplane crashes in Aeroflot (179 crashes), followed by Military – U.S. Air Force (174 crashes) and Air France (70 crashes).
7. Number of fatalities by the operator
As shown, Aeroflot is the operator that has the highest number of fatalities (7156 fatalities). It is followed by Military – U.S. Air Force (3717 fatalities).
Regarding the fatalities on the ground have American Airlines (2889 fatalities) and United Air Lines (2753 fatalities) the highest numbers.
