This blog has been updated to show how to use the Extension Manager released with Lumira 1.25. Now it is even easier to download and use Open-Sourced Lumira extensions.

Hello Everyone, my name is Rohit Kapoor, and I am a part of the Enablement team for the Product Management - Analytics division. The purpose of this blog is to show you how to download and deploy an extension into SAP Lumira.

The main reason for creating this blog is to show the power that extensions can give you within Lumira. Although Lumira is featured packed, sometimes, we need something a little bit extra. Which is where these awesome extensions come into play; you can use them to enhance your data stories, to gain some more insight into your data, or just to have fun with them! In any case, there is no reason not to download and use these extensions, because they are free, and extremely easy to deploy! I also can't give enough credit to SAP's developer community for creating these amazing extensions, which allow us to create excellent stories with our data.

Now, let's begin -

First we will start in the Visualization Room where I have already created a Heat Map visualization representing the top 50 companies for complaints within California. I used the Customer Complaint database from data.gov filtered to just complaints from California, which was then merged with a dataset that had zip codes translated to latitude and longitude values filtered to just California. (this was done with Lumira)

Consumer Complaints Dataset: https://catalog.data.gov/dataset/consumer-complaint-database

Zip Code to Latitude/Longitude Values: http://www.boutell.com/zipcodes/

You can also use this website to convert city/state/country locations to Longitude/Latitude Values: http://www.findlatitudeandlongitude.com/batch-geocode/

Suppose I wanted to be able to visualize the location of the companies that the complaints were made to on a map. This would allow me to show the top 50 companies that received complaints (on the regular heat map) as well as where these companies are (on the Google heat map), so that I could create a truly meaningful story. Currently the geographic visualizations within Lumira are not able to analyze cities with a population less than 100,000 people so many cities within my dataset would not be counted! However, there is no need to worry because you are able to add extensions to Lumira which can make your visualization dreams come true all thanks to our great developer community!

Doing a quick Google search can take you to the extensions page, or just follow this link: http://scn.sap.com/docs/DOC-57319

There are tabs for learning how to create extensions, visualization extensions, as well as data access extensions. I am mainly interested in visualizations so let’s go there.

Now, let’s find something that will help me complete my story. This one by my fellow colleague Mustafa titled ‘Google Heat maps Extension’ seems like it may fit my needs. You can look at his blog to make sure it will be a good fit for your dataset.

Within his blog he states that he used this extension to examine some Earthquake data, but it also seems like this extension will be a good fit for my data.

At the bottom of his blog, and of all other blogs for extensions, you will find a link to GitHub, you have to go there in order to download the extension.

Download and save the extension. I saved mine on my desktop. Now launch Lumira and click on - file -> extension, this will open up the extension manager. You can see what it looks like below.

Now, click on manual installation and browse for the extension you downloaded. Once you click on it Lumira will automatically download the extension from the zip file and you will see the installed extension in the extension manager.

Once that is done, you have to restart Lumira and your extension will appear in the Visualize room.

We can now create our new visualization to show us the location of companies that these complaints were made at. For my measure, I'll put Companies as a distinct count, and latitude and longitude as my dimensions. Here is the result:

This process can be used to download Lumira Data Access Connectors as well.

Disclaimer: These extensions are not SAP software, and are not supported by standard SAP documentation and services. They are created by SAP's developer community, and are to be used on your own accord.
