Redundant and inconsistent master data in multiple systems is a major problem for most lines of business in all industries. SAP Master Data Governance (MDG) provides the framework and tools to ensure consistent master data along end-to-end business processes. It supports a pre-defined set of key business objects including material, supplier, customer and financial data. In addition, customers can extend the framework to manage data integrity for their specific business entities or tailor the governance processes to their specific needs.
This week, SAP formally announced the general availability of the new enhancements with SAP Business Suite 7 Innovations 2011. Together with these enhancements - as part of Enhancement Pack 6 for SAP ERP 6.0 - we shipped the latest version of SAP MDG. Accordingly, this version is now generally available as well.
The general availability follows six months of ramp-up, during which the latest version of SAP MDG has been evaluated in 30+ customer projects. Additional customers are preparing their project start right now after the successful end of the ramp-up phase. With this level of traction, SAP MDG was clearly among the highlights of the Business Suite Innovation 2011 ramp-up. We are expecting the first go-lives with the latest version of SAP MDG already this month.
Companies chose this version of SAP MDG because of the broadened out-of-the-box support across master data domains like the new SAP MDG for Customer Data, and the enhancements for financial, material, and supplier data. This goes hand in hand with the improved user experience through task, context, or user specific adaptations, and the increased flexibility for data model, process, user interfaces, and validations.
In a nutshell, enhancements of SAP MDG in Suite 7 Innovation 2011 include:
Superior usability of the MDG Application Framework
Greater user interface and process flexibility
Enriched MDG Applications
Improved Data Replication
Enhanced Data Quality and Change Request Reporting

P.S. just in case, you have not seen it yet: There is a brand new SAP Press book on SAP Enterprise Information Management also featuring a chapter on SAP Master Data Governance. This book will help you understand the big picture of SAP’s enterprise information management offerings across SAP Data Services, SAP Information Steward, SAP NetWeaver Information Lifecycle Management, SAP Master Data Governance, and more. The chapter on MDG explains how things like workflow, change processes, staging, data modeling, user interface definition, data quality, search, key and value mapping, and data replication work in SAP MDG and how it can be deployed in your system landscape. It also includes an in-depth example on how to get started, when creating your own data models that you would like to put under governance with SAP MDG.
