Gartner recently recognized SAP as a market leader for its ability to execute and completeness of vision for our mobile platform. In fact, SAP and pending SAP acquisition Syclo took two of the top three spots in the Leader’s Quadrant (Antenna Software was the third). And, our three new development partners – Adobe, Appcelerator and Sencha – are recognized in the same report as visionaries. That’s great for SAP customers and partners because it validates our ability to continue to deliver on one of the most important and strategic IT topics – enterprise mobility – for both employee and consumer mobile apps.
For the first time, the report also looks at combined B2B, B2E and B2C mobile app development capabilities on a single platform. Previously, enterprises and analysts evaluated each separately – Mobile Enterprise Application Platform and Mobile Consumer Application Platform. In recent years, developers had begun to question why they had to have different mobile platforms for employee apps and for customer apps. Hence the title - Magic Quadrant for Mobile Application Development Platforms.
The report is important because it’s from a highly respected industry analyst firm who has been reporting on mobile application platform solutions for many years. We are pleased to be recognized as a leader. You can read the SAP press release here and get the MQ report here. But the news here is that this is not really news, at least not to anyone who has been paying attention to SAP.
Here is what Gartner and others have seen in the last year from SAP.
SAP's early bet on mobility and one of the largest mobile development teams. There are currently more than 80 pre-built mobile apps for iPhone, iPad, Blackberry, Android, Windows mobile in the SAP Store from SAP and our partners. 12 months ago, there were only a handful of apps. In October 2011 alone, SAP launched over 20 new mobile apps – Move over consumer apps -- SAP Mobile Apps are here. Every month we release new apps, new functionality and support for new devices for existing apps. That illustrates one benefit of the platform - speed to market.
Most flexible application development environment, including plug-ins for Eclipse and Visual Studio, and a proprietary studio. That environment gets even richer with the addition of tools from Adobe, Appcelerator and Sencha to create compelling mobile apps. If you thought that reality assisted apps were difficult to create or only roadmap items, think again. Look at this video to see what is possible, today.
Broadest device support among all the multichannel vendors, and the strongest MDM offering with Afaria. In fact, Gartner states, “SAP is also the only vendor to play in both MDM and Gartner’s Mobile Application Development Platform (MADP) space.”
SAP's sales and consulting channel provides its mobile products with significant market traction and a consulting force. SAP Rapid Deployment Solutions for mobile apps, for app development platform and for Afaria provide our customers with simple to buy, low cost, fixed length, fixed price solutions to get them up and running in weeks. Mobile is a key ingredient to being able to Run Better.
Finally, with the Sybase 365 Mobile Commerce solution, SAP offers banks, telcos, utilities and consumer product companies an award winning, end-to-end B2C platform enabling them to leverage the mobile channel to engage customers and create loyalty. mCommere enables a mobile transaction channel making it simple and convenient for customers to make purchases, pay bills and transfer funds. At the end of 2011, there were 5.9 billion mobile subscriptions, estimates The International Telecommunication Union (2011). That is equivalent to 87 percent of the world population. What other medium offers this reach? What other enterprise software company has a mobile platform to enable that market for you?
SAP has been consistently executing on a mobile strategy for many years and is now uniquely positioned to deliver end-to-end mobile solutions to the enterprise. As for the Gartner report? Validation and confirmation? Yes. Something SAP will promote? Yes. News? Maybe not.
