The SAP Mobile team is excited to be at the 20th annual SXSW Interactive Festival in Austin, Texas starting next week. Earlier in the year, I wrote a blog explaining why SAP was at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) – and the answer is the same. Mobile isn’t just for consumers – it’s for business too. We’re innovating in ways you would never have imagined and we’re hoping to bring you along for the ride. SXSW is known to many as a great music festival, but it’s much more than that. It is widely considered an incubator of cutting-edge technologies and now features five days of compelling presentations from the brightest minds in emerging technology. We’re thrilled to be a part of it.

We’ll be speaking in two sessions at the event, the first is aptly titled “Enterprise Invades the Apps Playground”. Think of the opportunity – according to Gartner, enterprise apps will generate nearly $40 billion in sales for developers in the next four years. The app stores of today are in for a major renovation as enterprises catch up on the shiny apps that have taken the consumer world by storm.

Will developers who today focus on building apps for the iTunes App Store start to favor of the less crowded, more opportunistic world of developing for business solutions? There are challenges to discuss and expensive delivery model, but they shouldn’t scare off the best developers. In the panel, we’ll discuss the trends that are reverberating through the mobile enterprise app world; why developers should think about enterprise mobility over consumer mobility; if IT departments should forego BYOD altogether in favor of issuing mandatory work devices; the challenges that companies face when moving forward in building enterprise mobility apps; and the next major chapter in enterprise mobility. Matt Carrier from SAP, Alex Williams from Tech Crunch, and John Arrow from Mutual Mobile will be hosted by Eric Lai for this engaging conversation March 8th at 4pm.

SXSW is great for providing everything from big-picture analysis of the future to hands-on training. The panel will give the big picture perspective of the opportunity for mobile developers, and our second session, a workshop titled Boldly Go! Enterprise Apps, From Idea to Market” is for anyone looking to futher evaluate the opportunity or get started.

Apps are king. They are the future of not only how we play, but how we work. In order to take advantage of this, there are several strategic steps developers must take as they set out to create a beautiful app which then, in a perfect world, morphs into a business. In the workshop, we’ll start with an idea. If you don't have one, we’ll talk about where you can have the most beneficial impact. Enterprises are in dire need of savvy app developers and the opportunities are endless.

Then, if you want to get technical, SAP experts David Brutman and John Wargo will be on hand to do that too. They’ll cover technical issues like how to implement an API layer to facilitate the flow of data into or out of your application or solution; how to manage and deliver the data, how to find and connect to the enterprises systems, databases and other services that you need; and last but not least, how to bring your beautiful app to market, from testing to monetizing.

If you’re planning to be a t SXSW Interactive March 8-12, then please join us for these sessions. We’re looking forward to being in the midst of what is unfolding in the world of technology for enterprises.
