The cloud is not a new concept for most businesses however software companies big and small continue to learn how and or leverage cloud platforms to innovate and drive go to market activities. Additionally, mobile is also not a new concept but is currently a popular area of focus for many companies and software vendors. Like the cloud, mobile is used by many to drive innovation and create new market opportunities that were not available before.

What opportunities are available when these two innovative technologies are combined?

SAP teamed up with Oxford Economics to answer this question. They collaborated to gather research and produce the ‘Unleashing the Cloud - Putting Mobility to Work’ report. This report, the second in a series of papers that analyze the strategic adoption of cloud computing, is based upon a global survey of 200 senior business and IT executives, conducted in December 2012 and January 2013. The largest group of respondents (16%) came from the US, followed by Brazil, India, Mexico, and the UK (13% each); Germany (10%); Canada (9%); China (6%); Japan (4%); Australia (3%); and Saudi Arabia (3%). Respondents came from five industries: retail (29%), consumer products (28%), banking (25%), telecommunications (13%), and capital markets (7%). More than one-quarter of respondent companies had sales between $1 billion and $4.9 billion. Larger companies made a significant showing, with 10% of respondents reporting sales between $5 billion and $9.9 billion, and 12% over $10 billion. Small and mid-size firms also were well represented: Nearly one in five respondents had sales of $25 million to $99 million, while 18% had sales between $100 million and $499 million, and 14% weighed in between $500 million and $999 million.

Chief Executive Officers made up the largest group of respondents (25%), followed by IT infrastructure managers (19%), business unit heads (15%), and Chief Intelligence Officers (13%). Other titles included Chief Operating Officers (8%) and Chief Innovation Officers (7%), along with Developers, Chief Architects, and EVP/SVP of Technology, Operations, and Marketing.

The findings of the research were so interesting that we created an infographic to highlight the key themes of mobile cloud platforms. Note that the infographic does not include all of the research findings, but you can find all the data points and themes in the report.

But there’s more. This is not the only research or report about combining these two types of technologies. In fact Gartner published a ‘The Nexus of Forces: Social, Mobile, Cloud and Information’ report that also dives into the union and collaboration of leading innovative technologies. SAP Community Network member dirk.wenzel posted a great blog about this report. From Dirk’s blog, ‘The report highlights how well aligned SAP’s go-to-market strategy and solution portfolio is with Gartner’s view of the Nexus. “SAP's business strategy fits into Gartner's Nexus as it embraces the cloud, mobile and information forces. SAP is unique in having aligned its go-to-market strategy and execution model around the Nexus by building its business strategy around applications, database and technology, mobility, cloud and analytics.”’
