Many Canucks are preparing for the long weekend ahead and will join friends and family to celebrate Canada Day on July 1. I often reflect on my heritage at this time which sparked the thought of this blog post, Canadian Mobile Innovation.
2013 has been a great year so far for Canadian Mobile Innovation. Here are some highlights from the first half of the year.
I kicked off the year by attending the Can Ontario Lead the Global Mobile Revolution? event hosted by Ontario College of Art & Design (OCAD) and the Mobile Experience Innovation Centre (MEIC). There event was the launch of Taking Ontario Mobile and Mobile Innovation Research Reports. The multidisciplinary team presented the research highlights and provided copies of the report to all attendees. If you are looking for your own copy, you can download the report here.
At the end of January, BlackBerry held BB10 launch events around the world which ignited excitement for the new devices and operating system. BlackBerry received global attention and support from the mobile market including BlackBerry & SAP Mobile Apps Challenge. You can read more about the launch event in a posting from earlier this year titled There are Great Opportunities for Those that Develop Mobile Apps for BB10.
In February, Wavefront held its annual Wireless Summits. I was fortunate to join the line up of speakers to talk about how Canada has the resources and potential to take an aggressive leadership position in the global wireless and mobile market. At the end of February was the GSMA Mobile World Congress event in Barcelona and Canada had a large, impressive floor display of Canadian companies and technologies.
Throughout the winter months the Mobile Experience Innovation Centre (MEIC) was preparing content for the launch of their Mobile Accelerator Program (MAP),  a new responsive website featuring videos from the Mobile Accelerator Program (MAP) 2013 series on New Product Development. SAP contributed to the MAP 2013 series and I would like to thank wayne.pauand sarah.mcmullinfor their support. They both lead sessions in the program and you can find their presentations on the program site. Their willingness to share product development and deployment best practices was impressive and reinforces the end of the lone genius approach.
But there is more. Many Canadian companies are adopting mobile to deliver innovative experiences to their employees and consumers.
I recently wrote a blog titled Hockey, Yogurt and Mobile: The Perfect Storm for Innovation about my experience using the PC Plus Program mobile app. Another great story is how is Societe de Transport de Montreal 'went mobile' with SAP. Below is a video about how they created their innovative mobile solution.
These events and mobile solutions are only a few examples of the mobile momentum that Canadians have and continue to build. I hope that Canadians from Bonavista to Vancouver Island, and from the Arctic Circle to the Great Lake waters will celebrate these accomplishments on July 1 and be inspired to deliver more innovation in the second half of this year!
