During a time where more and more people go mobile but think less and less about mobile security, summer can be a breeding ground for potential enterprise security risks. With the average cost of a data breach slated at $5.5M, your enterprise can’t afford to be off-guard this summer. The first step in making your enterprise summer ready? Be informed!

In order to thrive in today’s enterprise landscape, you must secure all of your endpoints and rethink ideas about mobile security. What better time to think about security than when your employees are in the throes of summer vacation season. To talk about the important issue of security, SAP just published a new infographic about mobile security – with a splash of summer.

One of my favorite stats in the infographic takes a look at productivity gains: “When people use mobile device for work there is a 45% increase in productivity.” But does that productivity come with a cost? The fact that 70 million smartphones are lost each year and that only 7% of them are ever recovered suggests and answer of “yes”. It’s good food for thought when you’re in a taxi or train, seeing the sights or relaxing at the beach.

I recently stumbled across a perfect example of what can happen to an innocent traveler. This blog, called “Life of a Stranger who Stole my Phone” is the story of a vacationer who had their phone stolen – with an interesting twist. Her phone was left on the beach while she took a late night dip and someone snatched it and crept off into the darkness unseen. You may think that most people would wipe a phone or sell it after then steal it – not this thief! He used it as his person phone, but forgot to switch off the camera upload function. He continually posts photos of himself taken with the device he stole.

Stories like this (minus the photographer angle) are disturbingly common. As an IT professional, are you prepared for the potential mobile enterprise security risks these summer months? Has your company done anything to secure corporate apps and data?

What I take from this infographic is that you need to think about security from all data entry points -- apps, content and devices. Think about it during summer vacation when thefts are high – but implement a solution to help your company deal with it all year long.

To help you get started, SAP’s mobile security team has just what you need to be sure you can relax on your summer vacation – some vacation education in the form of two upcoming mobile security events.
