Ghana is an African country which is best known for its production of cocoa. I went there to execute one of my major SAP mobile application projects using SAP Mobile Platform ( Sybase Unwired Platform ). I got the requirement from the business team for a solution on mobile for users who were 200-300 kilometers away from the head office and where there was no internet connectivity.
Solution through SMP
The SAP users were in the warehouses where there was no proper internet connectivity. To run the business the users had to enter the data to SAP system on a daily basis. But the warehouses being 200-300 Kms away from the city with no internet connectivity made us think of the solution using a mobile phone. A mobile application that is capable of accessing the business processes of SAP is the solution we provided. The mobile platform we used was Android. The mobile app talks to SAP via SMP ( SAP Mobile Platform ).
One of the major requirements from business team was that the mobile app should work even when the device is offline. SMP came here for help with the MBO approach; SMP is capable to run the app in offline with its APIs.
Reaching the mobile end users who were 200 kms away was really challenging. I traveled a lot and visited the places where the business process starts, the warehouses etc. Ahh! It was an interesting experience. Most places are under developed, only occupation of people being agriculture. Internet connectivity from mobile is very poor in some places.
We faced so many issues in the development and roll out stages. One of the major issues was with the license of the device registered with SMP server. Based on the high priority tickets raised to SAP we got the solutions at the right time to achieve our mission. I really appreciate the way SAP supports their customers.
Feedback and Excitement
While training the end users I felt really proud, I have seen the happiness and excitement on their faces by seeing the business process running in their mobile. We have made the business process that involves 3-5 SAP screens to one button click in the mobile app. The funniest part is that even the functional consultants who were involved in the testing of the project got attracted to the mobile solution we developed. They described it as “Magic in mobile”.
