On Wednesday, the 17th of February at 05:00 p.m. CET we had already the second call within the sapsysarchs call series about SAP Fiori and SAP Enterprise Portal. All in all it was about 20 people joining us at this call. The first call was at 09:00 p.m. CET and we wanted to experiment a bit with the times we use for our calls in order to get an impression which might fit best.

The topic was an ideal follow-up for our first call which was about SAP Gateway as SAP Fiori strongly relies on REST based services which you can develop using the SAP Gateway OData channel implementation approach. You can find the replay here: #SAPSysArchs - SAP Gateway Architecture Call - Wednesday 20th January 21:00 CET

For me personally there were three main questions:

- do we still need to invest in SAP Enterprise Portal as the SAP HANA Cloud Portal is coming up very quickly?

- what does it take to put SAP Fiori into SAP Enterprise Portal?

- when to go for which option?

We, the organizing team ( petr.solberg christian.braukmller4 and me) were very happy that two experts joined our call: aviad.rivlin, Product Owner of SAP Enterprise Portal and SAP Mentor and SAP Fiori expert Tamas Szirtes, HANA Distinguished Engineer and Linguist.

For all calls we try to get also experts and product owners from SAP onboard in order to have the possibilities to get as much answers for all the questions coming up during the call and have a trusted "source of truth".

What I personally took away from this call is that question 3 "When to go for SAP Enterprise Portal" depends on the investments into SAP EP happend in the past. If there is already an existing (and used, of course) SAP Enterprise Portal environment then it makes sense to continue there and integrate the SAP Fiori Launchpad there. The SAP Enterprise Portal also is able to integrate other UI technologies like WebDynpro for Java applications, SAP GUI for HTML, WebDynpro ABAP/Floorplan Manager applications or even more general said integration of SAP systems like BusinessObjects/BI, ECC and so on. Branding was also mentioned there. But the key for my point of view was the factor of existing investment.

During the call we discussed several options where SAP Fiori Launchpad could be used - we excluded the SAP HANA Cloud Platform because one hour wouldn't have been sufficient for covering this topic as well, although in the chat a lot of discussions were going on about SAP HANA Cloud Portal (especially by gareth.ryan  ). So as a small announcement in between we will do a separate call about SAP HANA Cloud Platform and one about SAP HANA Cloud Portal.

The first question seems to be also related to the existing investments and the use case which has to be covered. Maybe the call about SAP HANA Cloud Portal will bring clarification.

Instead of going for SAP Enterprise Portal the customers could also chose SAP Fiori Launchpad, this is a valid option but also related to existing investments. But if the start ground is a "greenfield" or a strategic decision behind then using SAP Fiori Launchpad for "replacing" SAP EP is a possible way to go.

If the decision is to keep on using SAP EP the SAP Fiori Portal Framework could be used - there are tiles for many technologies (SAP Fiori, SAPUI5, ABAP WD, SAP GUI for HTML).

In general it can be stated that SAP Fiori Launchpad is the experience and represents the user-centric entry point (by the way, I recommend to have a look at the latest openSAP course: Build Your Own SAP Fiori App in the Cloud – 2016 Edition - Bob Caswell, Yoram Friedman, Oliver Graef... ) for all new SAP solutions. It can be operated and run on different platforms: SAP Enterprise Portal using the SAP Fiori Portal Framework, SAP HANA Cloud Platform and on the rock-solid ABAP stack.

So in general there are a lot of options which have to be considered but based on the availability of SAP Fiori Launchpad on different platforms, it's ability to run on SAP EP gives us a lot flexibility to chose our own direction (also from a strategic point of view).

This is not a complete recap I just wrote down some statements during the call (and I am not a Fiori or Portal expert  ). If you have some more information we would be glad if you could share it.

The next call will be on Wednesday, the 17th of March at 08:30 p.m. CET - would be great to see you there 🙂
