More than 500 attendees from 124 companies and 26 countries convened October 21-24, 2012, in San Antonio, Texas, with the global SAP Oil & Gas team to discover and explore the best practices around capital and spend effectiveness, digital oilfield integration, hydrocarbon supply chain, and operational integrity.  Leading strategies were conveyed by customer case studies, industry thought-leaders, and subject-matter experts specifically on SAP Oil & Gas solutions.  The theme of the conference was situational awareness, sustainability, and prudent development.

One of the featured keynote addresses was from Devon Energy Corporation’s Executive Vice President of Administration, Alan Marcum.  SAP executives Chakib Bouhdary, Isabella Groegor-Cechowicz, and Mike Wendell also provided a keynote on the first day.  Chakib focused on SAP’s strategy and reasoning for recent acquisitions including Right Hemisphere, CrossGate, Syclo, and Ariba.  Following the format at SAPPHIRE NOW in Orlando this year, the keynotes on the first morning were followed with an executive panel moderated by ARC Advisory Group President and CEO, Andy Chatha, to discuss global collaboration in the industry. The panel included Alan Marcum; Chakib Bouhdary; HollyFrontier Vice President of Information Technology, Nellson Burns, and Tesoro Vice President of Information Technology, Marlee Perez.

Four tracks on the first afternoon were Exploration and Production, Shared Corporate Services, Refining and Downstream, and Oilfield Services.  Three roundtable discussions were held immediately following lunch on the first day.  Isabella Groegor-Cechowicz wrapped up with her keynote presentation entitled, “The Emerging Energy Platform”, that focused on new innovations from SAP and even included live demonstrations using HANA, Mobile, and Cloud computing.

The second day started with keynote presentations from Mike Wendell, Tim Minahan, and Mark Routt, followed by four tracks including Project Management, EAM, Sustainability, and Analytics.  Three more roundtable discussions followed lunch on the second day as well.

Four workshops on topics like Mobility and HANA were held on the third day for customers wanted a deeper dive in specific subject matter.

Many SAP customers also presented at the conference, including HollyFrontier, Devon Energy, Tesoro, Spectra Energy, Baker Hughes, Valero Energy Corporation, Hess Corporation, Penn Virginia Corporation, Suncor Energy Services, AmeriGas Propane, Vantage Drilling Company, Citgo, Shell, ConocoPhillips, BP, Total, Anadarko, Aera Energy, and ExxonMobil.

Several case examples were presented where technology solutions are deployed to both the business and also the operations environment that highlighted technology innovations with In-Memory, Mobile, Cloud and Analytics.

Videos of selected keynote presentations are available here.

In summary, the Best Practices for Oil & Gas conference was a resounding success by any measure.  It proved to demonstrate that SAP is continuing its leadership role in helping Oil & Gas customers move towards a proactive and predictive environment by enabling people with appropriate relevance, reach, and scale.
