Build Your Own SAP Fiori App in the Cloud, the latest openSAP course to feature a design and build challenge, attracted over 20,000 participants with over 1,500 designing, building, and submitting apps for peer review. During this course, learners were introduced to the holistic approach to app design, including the theory of design thinking to encourage learners to think about their users and their approach to designing their apps. Once learners had a good understanding of how to design the app, the course moved onto creating and enhancing, followed by customizing and extending of SAP Fiori apps. After the learners had got to grips with the theory, the SAP Fiori Design and Build Challenge began.
Thanks to this course, over 1,500 learners designed and developed their own apps using SAP HANA Cloud Platform and SAP Web IDE. Submissions included a wide range of categories covered by the learners showing the dynamic use of apps across industries, lines of business, and end users. App designs demonstrated a high standard of thought and design with the end user in mind and here are just some examples included in the app designs:

It’s amazing to see the real effect that this course has had on those who took part and feedback tells us that these are applications are intended to be used in the learners’ companies to enhance their user experience. SAP Fiori is enabling SAP Customers to deliver personalized, responsive, and simple experiences for users across an organization, whether they’re in the office or out and about.
As mentioned, the submissions were reviewed and graded by peers within the course and some of SAP’s executives even got involved in choosing the winning apps, including Sam Yen, Chief Design Officer, Quentin Clark, Chief Technology Officer, and Michael Kleinemeier, Member of the SAP Executive Board. Winners of the top three apps each receive an Apple MacBook Air for their submissions.

This feature was introduced as part of the first SAP Fiori course, Introduction to SAP Fiori UX, in late 2014. Learners were asked to design an app and submit it for review to their peers, with the top three designs winning an iPad Air for creativity. The openSAP team took participants feedback onboard and continued to evolve the feature to include a “Learn to grade phase” and “Evaluate yourself phase”. The Learn to grade phase allowed learners to review sample submissions and how they were graded by an SAP expert. The idea behind this is to ensure learners use the same grading standard and grade peers fairly and objectively.
With all of these new features onboard, the next openSAP course Build Your Own SAP Fiori App in the Cloud, went one step further by adding hands-on practice. Students were asked not only to submit the design of an app but also to demonstrate the development of an app in SAP Web IDE, SAP’s cloud based development environment.
Build Your Own SAP Fiori App in the Cloud has received astounding feedback from learners and has proven itself as one of the most popular openSAP courses to date. Learners rated this course for the holistic approach The course started by explaining the theory of design thinking to encourage learners to think about their users’ needs when designing their apps. Once learners had a good understanding of how to design the app, the course moved onto creating and enhancing SAP Fiori apps, and customizing and extending SAP Fiori apps. As a bonus feature, the course experts delivered two Q&A sessions to give learners the opportunity to get direct answers in a live chat in addition to the usual discussion forums. After the learners had got to grips with the theory, the SAP Fiori UX Design and Build Challenge began, a peer-graded assignment. The challenge asked learners to take what they have learnt and put it all together. Learners demonstrated end-to end the design and build of a SAP Fiori app, starting with the story (app idea), the description of the app user (persona), the user experience journey and ending with a mock-up and proof-of-concept Fiori app. Learners documented their work and submitted it for peer-grading.
