What is DPV you ask?

Delivery Point Validation (DPV) is a USPS technology that helps validate the accuracy of address information. With DPV, you can identify addresses that are Undeliverable As Addressed (UAA) and determine whether or not an address is a Commercial Mail Receiving Agency (CMRA), a private business that acts as a mail receiving agent. DPV uses data that the USPS provides to CASS vendors, such as SAP Business Objects.

DPV can be useful in the following areas:

  • Mailing:  DPV assists in screening out undeliverable-as-addressed (UAA) mail and cuts down on mailing costs.
  • Information quality:  DPV's abilitly to verify an address down to the individual house, suite, or apartment rather than bloack face increases the data's level of accuracy.
  • Increased assignment rate:  Using DPV tiebreak mode to resolve a tie when other tie-breaking methods are not conclusive may increase assignment rates.
  • Preventing mail-order-fraud:  DPV can assist merchants by verifying valid delivery addresses and Commercial Mail Receiving Agencies (CMRA).  This can eliminate shipping of merchandise to individuals placing fraudulent orders.

To add the fields to your record layout:

1. Click File > Properties > Database

Below you will see the DPV fields that can be added.

 Record Layout

This is what is populated in each field:

DPV CMRA - Commercial Mail Recieving Agency

Y The address is a valid Commercial Mail Receiving Agency.
N The address is not a valid Commercial Mail Receiving Agency.
L The address triggered DPV locking.

blank This component is blank when the DPV mode is turned off, the input address cannot be assigned, or DPV processing is locked. Field is blanked out as a result of Extended Services DSF2 processing.

DPV Status -   This tells you if the address is a valid address.

Y The address is a confirmed delivery point. The primary range and secondary range (if present) are valid.

N The address is not a valid delivery point.

S The primary range is a valid delivery point, but the parsed secondary range is not valid in the DPV directory.

D The primary range is a valid delivery point, but the secondary range data is not available on input.

L The address triggered DPV locking.

blank This component is blank when the DPV is turned off, the input address cannot be assigned, or DPV processing is locked. Field is blanked out as a result of Extended Services DSF2 processing.

DPV Vacant Indicator - This tells you if the address is vacant.

Y Address is vacant.
N Address is not vacant.
blank Address was not looked up.

DPV No Stats - Indicates whether the address is a vacant property, it receives mail as a part of a drop, or it does not have an established delivery yet. The returned values are as follows:

Y Address is flagged as No Stat in DPV data.
N Address is not No Stat.
blank Address was not looked up.

Now that we have gone over the fields and what they mean you might ask yourself what you would do with some of the information.

Each one of the fields gives you information about each address.  There is an the Error Code (Err_Stat) for records that are not DPV confirmed.  That is E601.  The E601 error codes are given if an address is not given a valid delivery point.  You may want to remove those addresses from your file since you would most likely end up paying more for those pieces, or they will come back as undeliverable pieces.  You will notice that in the DPV Status field there will be an N.  You can add the Error_Stat field to your record layout if you wish.   This way when the address correction is done this field will be filled out.  You can then select those records and export the selected records to give a list back to your customer.  This way they can correct the records and maybe send them back to you.
