Healthcare providers and federal agencies have access to an unprecedented amount of data. From electronic health records to insurance claims and physician notes, the volume of data is expanding exponentially with no limit in sight. How can this data have a positive impact on health and wellbeing?

A recent article by the Government Business Council showcases many federal initiatives focused the use of data and analytics to
improve health and wellbeing. The article cites:

  • National Institutes of Health commitment of $96 million to establish Big Data to Knowledge Centers of Excellence aimed at supporting
data science to advance biomedical research
  • Food and Drug Administration deployment of Sentinel to identify latent safety risks in post-marketed medications
  • Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute’s goal to aggregate 30 million Americans’ complete medical records to compare the effectiveness of different treatment protocols

Beyond these examples, consider the potential for improved healthcare with evidenced-based medicine. This practice draws upon clinical data in real time to help doctors diagnose illnesses and prescribe treatment more accurately. Or, the human genome sequencing initiative that’s intended to uncover the root causes of chronic conditions to help doctors reduce diagnostic timelines and improve treatment protocols.

The success of these initiatives is directly related to the power of the data platforms on which they run. True real-time analytics is only possible with in-memory platform technologies. With this technology federal agencies can process information and achieve insights at speeds never before possible.
