It’s a great partnership. A three way partnership starting with the State of Indiana who are visionary thinkers who are doing the impossible, reimagining government and SAP and partner KSM Consulting. The magic is the work being done at the state house in the Management and Performance Hub or MPH. That is where state employees and employees from KSMC are uncovering the hidden value in big data.
The vision of utilizing big data came from Paul Baltzell, CIO for the State of Indiana. He wanted to find a way to tap into data from various departments to see if there were hidden insights into why Indiana has a sustained higher rate of infant mortality spanning the last 10 years. In June of 2014 the state of Indiana selected SAP solutions to help them combat this pressing issue. They partnered with KSM Consulting to dive deep into the data to uncover new possibilities to change this trend.
SAP and KSM Consulting
Utilizing the expertise of both KSM Consulting and SAP solutions, the state of Indiana launched their Management and Performance Hub, an advanced data analytics management system using big data that performs business analytics and in-depth case studies. The first major case study on infant mortality had significant findings that resulted in identification of at-risk groups and an additional $13.5 million in funded programs for prevention.
The outcome a year later was the Horizon Award from the Center for Digital Government as part of the Best Fit Integrators Award. The Best Fit Integrator Awards honor technology firms that tailor solutions to fit the unique needs of government. Winners were selected from nominations submitted by public sector agencies of companies who partnered with them on projects addressing such areas as business licensing, health and human services, finance and administrative services, and performance metrics and management.

One of targeted areas of focus coming up will be with domestic and child abuse. Indiana hopes to use its SAP HANA engagement to empower caseworkers to make more informed decisions regarding individual cases.
With SAP HANA mathematical algorithms, the caseworkers will be able to identify factors that usually result in child abuse. They can then determine and remove children from situations in which abuse is highly likely.
As Indiana CIO Paul Baltzell explained, “The vision is to provide caseworkers with the information they need to make better decisions, to provide a child with a happy life, and to not only survive, but to have a productive life, and a good childhood, and the things that they need to be successful.”
A great three way partnership is obtainable anywhere. The key ingredients are having the vision, turning that vision to change lives through technology and finding those kindred spirits aligned to the vision and partnering to make it happen. That recipe creates magic.
