In this blog post I would like elaborate on how the rapid-deployment model has continuously evolved over the last years. By leveraging SAP Rapid Deployment solutions and cloud services, it’s now possible to have a system up and running within hours, pre-configured with all relevant best practices for the individual customer situation. This is the basis of a new implementation experience that leads to significantly faster time-to-value, predictable business outcomes and substantially lower implementation cost.

Blueprinting doesn’t need to be done any more from scratch, starting with a blank sheet of paper. Instead, the custom-assembled best practices system is the start of the implementation.  The functionality is explored in the actual system to decide where changes or extensions to the best practices are required. We see more and more customers adopting this approach. The question for them is no longer ‘What do we want?’, but rather ‘where should we depart from, or extend, the best practice that we get from SAP?’.  The logical consequence of this approach is significantly less modifications and custom-specific add-ons, making the system easier to maintain and reducing the total cost of ownership.

The Rapid Deployment model evolved

It took some time to evolve the rapid deployment model towards the implementation method for SAP’s solutions in cloud and everywhere. In 2010, Rapid Deployment solutions were invented with on-premise deployments in mind. Since 3 years we have continuously extended the RDS approach, tools and content. Today, customers can not only combine several RDS packages to a complete solution landscape but also get these best practice solutions pre-configured in the cloud. This means that, at the start of a project or even earlier for evaluation purposes, the customer has a pre-configured best-practice solution running. Based on this system, the customer can evaluate what the SAP best practices will mean to their business and where additional customization or extensibility is required.

I have described how RDS and cloud deployment complement each other in a video interview at TechED Amsterdam, which also describes the role of the RDS Best Practices in the HANA Enterprise Cloud.

RDS as the new implementation paradigm is also described in a new book, published by SAP Press.
