"Outside the Lines" is borrowed from an ESPN program, meaning, I will cover subjects outside the education sessions.  Note this is not everything, but just briefly covering four areas:

1) Catch A Mentor

2) Inclusion

3) SAP Fiori Jam Band

4) Viz-A-Thon

Catch A Mentor

For some reason, I keep wanting to say I “catched” a Mentor.  This year at Las Vegas SAP TechEd the SAP Mentors wanted to connect more with those who attended TechEd, and one of the examples was the Catch a Mentor mission. If you missed it and are attending SAP TechEd Barcelona, you can participate on-site there.  Learn more about this mission here.

Congratulations to tobias.hofmann who is in 7 or 8 Catch A Mentor pictures

Women’s Inclusion Event

Last week I saw a definition of inclusion that said “inclusion is a sense of belonging: feeling respected, valued for who you are; feeling a level of supportive energy and commitment from others so that you can do your best work”.  Miller and Katz 2002

At work we want to feel involved and included.  I also heard a statistic last week that only 43% of employees in the US feel engaged with our work.   “By 2020 the proportion of women in the workforce will have gradually increased to about 50%”.  “Inclusiveness is necessary to avoid higher turnover rates”.   Hence, the importance of this type of inclusion event.

Congratulations to Stacey Fish, Elizabeth Imm, Karin Tillotson and sponsors SAP and Tata Consultants for the event held Tuesday at SAP TechEd Las Vegas.  While I was at the Viz-A-Thon event and could not personally participate, I did hear good things about the event and was part of the planning meetings.  I was moved by the passion that Stacey, Elizabeth and Karin had to see a successful event through in a short amount of planning time was amazing.  I also witnessed Karin inviting SAP University Alliance students to the event.

SAP Fiori Jam Band

The SAP Fiori Jam Band been a tradition for years now and kudos to matt.harding for leading the band once again.   I could not be there in person for this event either, but the next best thing is to enjoy Martin Lang’s photos of the event here on Animoto or YouTube:

At breakfast the following day, I heard people had a good time at this event and it had the largest turnout ever.  Congratulations to the band.

Data Viz-A-Thon

I already wrote about Last week's DataGenius SAP TechEd Las Vegas Viz-a-Thon #SAPtd

I forgot to mention the free beer, great pizza and most of all, great networking.  It was great meeting Dong Pan and linda.peruzzi in person.  I’ve attended Linda’s virtual sessions (see http://scn.sap.com/community/lumira/blog/2014/10/29/lumira-visualize-your-success-virtual-brief-clas... ) and Dong has presented before for ASUG.

I had a nice long chat with eric.ledu, about the day’s sessions and about speaking French (when you’re from France) in Montreal.  Eric also knows about Native American history and we discuss how things are so different.

So see you next year in September (September 19-23) in Las Vegas.
