Great news for SAP Global IT! At the iCMG Enterprise & IT Architecture Excellence Awards ceremony on September 19, SAP was crowned winner in the category “Future IT – Emerging Technologies”.

Just in case you don’t know iCMG. Here is a short description from their LinkedIn profile: iCMG is a pioneer and leading full service Enterprise & IT  architecture Firm. It’s global leader in providing architectural services to a wide variety of clients across 32 countries. The complete ecosystems of Enterprise & IT Architecture services include consulting, training & certification, research & advisory. In addition, iCMG is reaching more geography and business domains through online architecture services such as Ask the Architects, Online Training & Webinars. In the last 12 years, we have helped customers to manage complexity and contradictions within enterprise for growth.

More than 150 nominations from 27 countries competed for 26 awards. SAP Global IT beat off tough competition from industry-leading names to walk away with this prestigious award – the second iCMG award in a row, after winning the Excellence Award for Enterprise Architecture Framework in 2012.

Attending the award ceremony in Bangalore on Thursday, September 19, were Manik Saha, CIO APJ, and myself. The award ceremony was incorporated into a two day conference attended by 250 top management and business professionals.

I was panelist in the discussion “The 10 commandments of product innovation & realization – challenges & rewards” in which I had the possibility to highlight the significance of innovative thinking at SAP. We received several questions from the audience and discussed:

  • How can you handle technology, finance and marketing in a start-up?
  • How can you innovate, if your company is working on incremental feature enhancements only?
  • What are the strengths and weaknesses for software innovation in India?

The award ceremony night started end of day one. Everybody enjoyed a casual dress during the day, but for this special moment we switched to an appropriate business formal dress. It was on Sunil Dutt Jha, CEO & Chief Architect of iCMG, to welcome the attendees, special and honor guests.

The Oxygen Dance Group took care of the general program with several dancing acts, from traditional Indian to modern Western.

Just one hint for the organisator: Don’t call it a ceremony dinner, if you plan to serve the food at 10:30pm. That a little bit ‘surprising’ for an european stomach.

On Day 2 I had my break-out session for the nomination topic “In-memory enabled architecture for Enterprise Analytics” and enjoyed it very much to discuss the amazing journey from a BusinessWarehouse reporting shop to a real-time and business self-service enabled analytics environment with more than 100 attendees.

At the end of the conference day Manik was in the hot seat for the panel discussion on “Leading Change – Is it a Business or an IT Problem?” with a group of C-level executives.

In addition to winning the Future IT category, SAP AG was also among the finalists in the “Cloud Technologies” category for the initiative “Implementing a hybrid cloud platform”. This initiative aims to massively increase agility and deployment speed mainly for development system infrastructures (to deploy within hours instead of days or weeks) by implementing both provisioning as a service (PaaS) and infrastructure as a service (IaaS) functionality to address target customers’ business needs.

iCMG is a global leader in Enterprise and IT Architecture and widely acknowledged for its expertise in addressing enterprise problems, change, and complexity. Interim Chief Information Officer, Axel Bülow, said, “to receive the iCMG Global Excellence award, which recognizes the best architecture implementations in the industry, demonstrates the world-class standard of innovative thinking within the SAP Global IT organization. This is a truly remarkable achievement and I extend my congratulations to everyone involved in keeping SAP at the forefront of innovative IT”.
