I'd like to start this blog post with a quote from the movie Tron:

The Grid. A Digital Frontier.

I tried to picture clusters of information as they moved through the computer.

What did they look like?

Ships? Motorcycles?

Were the circuits like freeways?

I kept dreaming of a world, I thought I'd never see.

And then, one day - I got in.

Imagine, instead of The Grid, a huge company like SAP that is known for its on-premise solutions, running the next big thing by moving into the cloud. Just like The Grid, this is also something "digital", something hard to imagine. You have to experience it to actually feel and believe it. SAP has decades of experience in on-premise solutions, but they are relatively new to the cloud. 3 years ago I would have said there is no way this is possible. Now I'm telling you: It is possible. At TechEd in Barcelona they demonstrated exactly this. They showed how a large organization like SAP can indeed rapidly move into the cloud and use the latest technologies to bring real value to businesses. If you ask me, I think they are doing it really, really well.

I attended TechEd in Barcelona, and even though I had to work at a booth and hold a session I was able to get some insights into all the different areas, technologies and products SAP was promoting. But the most impressive thing was bjoern.goerke's keynote. It was not a marketing speech, and he didn't just talk about how great our products are. What he did was way better: an outer-space themed show and tell demo, utilizing a huge range of SAP's cloud products. He started down at an ERP system and went up step by step until he did some live-coding in HANA Cloud Platform, including an IoT (Internet of Things) scenario. It was mind-blowing, because all he did worked perfectly! If you haven't watched it yet, I ask you kindly to stop reading now and start watching the replay of his keynote. In his keynote, Bjoern not only showed how we can leverage all the benefits from the cloud, but also how to combine the two existing worlds - the on-premise world and the cloud world - to build hybrid solutions that use the best out of these two.

This year's TechEd was all about S/4 HANA and moving into the cloud by using SAP's HANA Cloud Platform (HCP). In our Business Innovation & IT area, we were able to give customers a lot of insights into recent products, including HCP. At our booth, we had more than one hundred customer discussions and several educational sessions. julia.lakatos also rocked with some SAPUI5 CodeJam sessions, giving customers a 101 in UI5 development. We even were able to show them how they can use a 3-Tier landscape in the cloud and how transports between different tiers can be accomplished with cloud-based applications.

Overall, I can say for sure now that the whole cloud and Internet Of Things (IoT) topic is not just hype anymore. It's reality. It's now starting to bring real value to businesses of all sizes. It's a new era of technology - and SAP is right in the middle of it. I'm looking forward to a very exciting year in 2016!
