I chose to go to Drexel University in Philadelphia, PA, expressly because it offered a co-op (cooperative education program) as part of the curriculum. I made a good choice. I learned firsthand that graduates with resumes that include experience with company-specific solutions and technology quickly go to the head of the class.

In her recent blog post, Lisa Nonamaker affirms the case for graduating with both a degree and company-specific training in the social age. Now – thanks to innovations in online education and social media – students can manage the second half of the equation at their own pace, anytime and anywhere.  She encourages students to kick-start their careers with SAP or one of its many customers through SAP Learning Hub.

To quote Markus Schwarz, senior vice president and global head of SAP Education, the digital learning hub “meets the learning needs and habits of today's students and gives them a firm foundation for pursuing an SAP certification, thereby opening up additional career paths."

Digital Learning Hubs Deliver Real-World Value

I see SAP Learning Hub as the (inevitable) marriage of co-op and digital. Certainly the recession has fixed the focus on getting a job, not just a degree. But if a physical co-op is not the right investment, why not take an online approach?

In an online presentation of its digital learning hub, SAP summaries the reasons for – and value of – offering round-the-clock, unlimited access to:

  • ~150 selected courses, including courseware on the latest cloud, Big Data, and mobile technology innovations
  • A personalized environment with user-relevant data and a learning history linked to the student’s login information
  • Informal “learning rooms,” led by subject matter experts, that cover particular topic areas or parts of a specific curriculum
  • Clear certification paths as an option

Is it politically correct to say that adding real-world value to an undergraduate degree is a “no brainer?” Especially when the added value is cloud- and subscription-based?
