This morning I had the pleasure to talk to trinoy.hazarika/profile, lokesh.rajak/profile and tanushree.das, members of the winning team from SAP TechEd Bangalore DemoJam and SAP Custom Development colleagues.  What came through loud and clear during our call was how passionate this team is about innovation.

To develop their winning concept Trinoy, Lokesh and Tanushree, along with SAP colleague, phanibhushan.m and raju.borda2 from partner company, .msg spent their own time to research different use cases that they might work on.  The concept was based on a real need in India where building fires are common, and there are numerous fatalities - often children.  They explored several different approaches including using land movement robots but found that flying drones provided better coverage.

Meeting after regular business hours, they worked both on their own and as a team to learn about visual enterprise technology and the SAP HANA Cloud platform.  They broke the application into various components and worked on them individually then met to integrate all the technology into one application.

Their solution: Rescue Bots powered by SAP HANA is based on a robot drone that can fly through a fire scene and identify where humans are and the various obstacles that are on the scene.  It then pushes data to the SAP HANA Cloud platform.  Using an algorithm, the application can then identify where victims are and determine the safest rescue route, saving time and decreasing risk.

What’s even more amazing to me is that this was all accomplished in a one month time frame, including researching the concept, learning the technology and building the application. Keep in mind this was all the more challenging since in the course of their regular jobs as developers for SAP Custom Development, they often work long hours.

Participating in DemoJam has become a tradition for this group. And, it was not their first time making it to the stage – or even their first time in the winning spot.  In 2012, this same team won for their entry SAP Freeway and in 2013 they placed second for SAP Intelli-Den.

That DemoJam is an opportunity for developers to explore new applications and learn new technology was a sentiment echoed by each team member.  They are sure to be back at the next DemoJam looking to defend their winning streak.
