This year as a part of SAP's Month of Service, I volunteered at The Marine Science Institute. Being a long-time resident of the Bay Area, I wanted to do my part to help preserve the great natural environment that we get to enjoy here. The Marine Science Institute is a wonderful organization that works with school children in the Northern Cal area to teach them about the ocean and its inhabitants up close and hands on, along with how we can preserve our bay and our ocean.
I have volunteered with the organization twice before, and this time took the lead in bringing my colleagues together for a project. Our team helped with a number of tasks. We removed a giant in-ground planter and transplanted the native plants to a new locations. Some of us paved that same area with gravel, as the path is now used by the fuel trucks for the institute's teaching ship. We also had the exciting job of painting two 3D topography maps (4'x5') to match an actual map of the bay and the surrounding area. (More blog after photos.)
We really came together as a team, and had a busy and fulfilling day. Some of the people already knew each other, but a good majority did not, so it was great to meet new colleagues from different teams across SAP's offices in Silicon Valley.
A big thanks to my colleagues on the volunteer team who helped make this project successful and a lot of fun! Thanks also to the institute's employees who are great, very knowledgeable , and were so kind and welcoming to us.
The weather was perfect, we had a wonderful breeze to keep the heat at bay, and it was a fantastic day for all!
