July 2016: Your on-demand version! Your slide share! Liz Dwyer presented on Empowering Business with a true learning culture or 'Why you should care'.

April 2016: Your on-demand version! Your slide share. Liz Dwyer presented on 'Reduce Support costs: for most organizations, the cost of ongoing support is a significant and constant expense.  But research consistently shows that the majority of support calls in any organization are not related to system issues or performance, but to user ‘how-to’ issues.  How can better user adoption help you reduce the estimated 80% of your support budget spent on addressing knowledge gaps?

March 2016: Your on-demand version! Your slide-share. Scott Cornwell, Regional Director APJ and Sales Engineer discussed the importance of user experience data and how this can be the key to making the shift from feelings and perceptions to data-driven decision making.

My goal for this blog is to help you understand the forces that are impacting user adoption in today’s fast paced business world and what to consider when preparing to embark on your user adoption journey.

Let’s start by defining the business context for this discussion – the business environment you and many customers find themselves operating in today.

Increased globalization, innovative technology, and shifting demographics are fuelling global competition, accelerating business velocity, and driving the transformation to knowledge-based economies.

In today’s Digital Economy – every business is NOW becoming a technology business.

As the future of work changes, learning must change with it. Companies can respond in 3 ways:

  • Keep your workforce enabled and engaged
  • Create a continuous learning environment
  • Make learning social, at the point of need and sticky

It will come as no surprise that 73% of CEO’s believe the lack of employees with key technical skills is a threat to their company’s growth.

So now let’s look at 4 challenges that you will be wrestling with right now:

  1. Complexity. The degree of workplace complexity increases every day.  New channels to market, shorter product cycles, and regulatory changes are around us every day
  2. Transition to Cloud. Project structures and timelines are changing as companies are transitioning to cloud based solutions. These deployments are characterized by rapid innovation cycles and a high degree of agility. Consequently this is driving major changes on learning and adoption approaches.
  3. Priorities. User enablement can often slip down the priority list and risks insufficient resourcing to appropriately support user adoption requirements.
  4. And last, but not least. Sustainability. Often, the problem is that customer training budgets for user enablement are focused primarily on significant traditional training efforts around go-live, but little after.  These one-off enablement programs, often created from scratch, need to include sustainability plans for retaining or increasing the skills of the user base after go-live.  Without this sustainability plan the user adoption and productivity will actually decrease.

Broadly speaking the user adoption journey has 4 key phases. It is important to realize that every business will be at some point on this journey and that it is a journey that never ends because of the nature of the business environment and the need for constant change.
