I listened to a recent recording by SAP APJ about SAP Certification.  This is Part 1.

Professional is for those with 3-7 years of experience; they would lead projects

Specialist builds on associate level – once someone has associate certification they qualify for specialist exam; now have HANA specialist exams – install

Certified individual can provide credential as a third party piece of validation
