The FutureSOC Lab initiated by the Hasso-Plattner-Institute (HPI) provides resarchers with free-of-charge access to state-of-the-art IT infrastructure including hard- and software. It enables and promotes the exchange and interaction between research communities and its industrial partners, which are EMC², HP, Fujitsu and SAP. The lab hosts a scientific workshop that focuses on the area of operations within the context of cloud

computing.

Due to an ever increasing system complexity and handing over control partly to users, traditional approaches to data-center management have become difficult to apply. The workshop focuses on operations in a cloud environment, i.e., how a cloud can be managed, monitored, analyzed and optimized. Academic research has primarily focused either on technology to enable cloud computing or on business aspects of cloud computing. There is also a substantial body of theoretical work on service placement, etc. However, we have experienced a growing gap between these results and the problems that occur in the day-to-day practical experience of cloud operators. The workshop aims to bridge this gap.

It is the goal of this workshop to bring together researchers and industry partners to dis-cuss the most relevant and urgent topics of cloud providers and to present most recent research results in the field. We are looking for scientific papers and practical experience reports that might have an impact on real-world cloud operations. We want to provide a stimulating and fruitful forum to foster collaboration, to discuss ideas, exchange experi-ences, and to find new answers to the overall challenge of improving cloud operations.
