Working at SAP we all know it’s a cool place to be. A dynamic, evolving, adapting company that is confident about the future and seems to be the embodiment of Alan Kay’s 1971 quote during a meeting at Xerox PARC “The best way to predict the future is to invent it”. But now it seems that the rest of the world, or at least that part of the world considering where to begin their cool careers, are starting to realise it too.

ZDNet recently reported the results of a survey of 530,000 IT students and young professionals as to which company is the most attractive to them as an employer. SAP has continued to rise up through the rankings and now is second only to Google as the company students would most like to work for, ahead of Microsoft and ahead of Apple with which SAP was tied for third place in 2012.

The results were based on answering which were the top three companies that students would like to work for and from the total number of responses 10% stated SAP ahead of 9.7% for Microsoft, 8.1% for Apple, 7.9% for IBM and Siemens, 7.7%

A key finding of the result is not only the response but the trend over several years. In recent years only Google, SAP and Amazon have bucked the trend across the major traditional ICT companies to become more popular rather than less. Similarly IT students seem more willing to g into positions where technology is key and not just a supporting role suggesting that this generation, brought up on ubiquitous, easier to use technology with greater creative potential have lost their fear of using technology in their professional lives.

Respondents also clearly gave a preference to companies they perceived as having a good work-life balance with flexible hours and working conditions. The high ranking of SAP suggests that students and young professionals feel that SAP is a company that they can trust to give them that balance and thereby enable them to stay committed to and enjoy their SAP careers for the long-term.

One of the key aspects of SAP’s University Alliances program is to promote the value of SAP not only as a technology, not only as a business, but as a cool, dynamic, challenging and above all rewarding place to be. A company with an exciting present and a determination to invent the future, and any students who want to be part of it are welcome on board!
