On December 9, 2013, nearly 100 students at Harvard University learned how SAP uses Design Thinking to accelerate successful innovation with SAP’s Sports Solutions.

Harvard’s “Design Thinking and Innovation” course is led by Dr. Srikant Datar (pictured in the center below) who invited SAP to present in two of his classes to help students gain a real-world view into how SAP applies Design Thinking in working with customers…from Observation, Research, Synthesis, Ideation/Story Boarding, and Prototyping through  Validation.

Sami Muneer of SAP’s Sports Solutions Product Management presented to students in the “Design Thinking and Innovation” course at Harvard Business School. Sami shared that the German National Soccer team recently asked SAP to help them prepare for the World Cup, because they had heard SAP uses Design Thinking with customers in the National Football League to innovate how they use analytics. Sami shared an example of how teams improve the scouting process. Sami shared that SAP devotes 70% of a customer solution engagement to Design Thinking, and only 30% to actual coding. “Getting the problem space right in the beginning, and prototyping early and often, enables us to bring the right solution to the end user in a much shorter timeframe and at lower cost,” Sami shared with students.

John Baxter of the SAP University Alliances team also shared with students how SAP engages with top universities to enable teaching with SAP software and curriculum, engage in co-innovation and research, and recruit top early talent into outstanding careers at SAP.

A special thanks to Professor Datar for the opportunity to share how Design Thinking enables SAP to accelerate successful innovation, not only in Sports but across all 25 industries in which SAP provides the leading enterprise applications powered by SAP HANA that make the world run better and improve people’s lives.
