The next participant we want to introduce to you is Alexandru Dumitrescu. He studies Computer Science (MEng) at the 4th year at the University of Bristol,UK.
In our interview we have asked him a few questions about his motivation to participate and his future plans with the project. Find his answers below:
Why did you apply to participate in the App Camp?
Appathons are a very good way to meet new people. I also liked the theme of the Appathon and I was interested about what we can achieve with the satellites' data.
What did you like and what did you experience during the Appathon?
I liked that the competition was very intense and everyone wanted to deliver the best product they can. People from different domains and with different backgrounds also made this experience more exciting.
What are your plans with the project for the future?
Our ambition is to enhance food security and optimize farming on a global scale. On top of providing an unparalleled crop-monitoring experience to farmers using the latest and greatest satellite technologies, we're looking towards the future and want to be the first to build and deploy predictive monitoring that identifies potential problems before they happen. Certainly not an easy feat, yet an incredible vision that we want to see to fruition!
Say something about your team/tell us how you met.
We are all computer science at University of Bristol and we all knew beforehand. We complement each other, some of us are focus on frontend and UI and the rest on backend. Having a wide range of skills is in our advantage.
Share something funny or an anecdote that happened during the project.
Even a small bug in the app can give random results. This was also the case with the first version of our application, where the Sahara Desert was considered a very fertile land.

FarmIQ (previously known as CropAdviser), is an app concept looking to harness the power of Earth observation data and agricultural big data to provide not only state-of-the-art crop monitoring but predictive monitoring that identifies problems before they happen.
