On the 11th and 12th of March 2015 I was given the unique opportunity to attend TechED 2015 and Technivirsity at Bangalore International Exhibition Center(BIEC).

I am sharing my experience of those two days with the help of a blog.

SAP TechED started on the 11th of March with much fan fare. The day started out with a SAP Executive Keynote by Bernd Leukert , Member of the Executive Board of SAP SE. During the course of the keynote we where introduced the new technologies developed by SAP to help run businesses smoother. Some of the major technology announcements were-

  1. 1.S/4 HANA- A new and improved version of the popular HANA platform. The S/4 platform supports IoT, Big Data and Predictive Analysis. Using S/4 HANA,  we can predict requirements based on the existing data available.

  1. 2.App in 15 minutes?? - This was one of the live demo's presented by Ian Kimbel. During this demo we saw the power of HANA cloud platform in not only deploying but building a mobile application from scratch in under 15 minutes.

  1. IoT Drone- During this live demo by Ian Kimbel we were introduced to the concept of how IoT can utilize HANA for solving business issues. We were presented with a situation, where in a windmill farm, one of the windmill hits a snag. Rather sending a technician for repair,  a drone is sent, which can scan the mill and determine the probable issue with the help of HANA. This reduces the time taken for diagnostics of problems as well as reduce the risk at workplaces.

In conclusion the keynote introduced us to the next generation of products by SAP and their business plan for the future with respect to IoT and Big Data.

Following the keynote, we could explore the various booths on the show floor. The booth which caught my interest was the IoT booth. The IoT booth was run by the SAP IoT team from USA and India. We where introduced to how microcontrollers and SBC's can acquire data and upload to SAP HANA platform.

There where so many interesting booths present that if I wrote about each and every one of them I could compile a 10 page booklet. To name a few HANA based vending machine, Authenticity of automobile parts , HANA Mobile Platform etc.

Following the long fruitful day of learning it was time for the prime event of SAPTechED  Demo Jam!!!

Demo Jam is a developer competition where the finalist present/demo their solution to a problem. The winner is determined by the approval rating of the crowd. During this Demo Jam we where presented with 7 unique and different ideas. The idea which caught my eye was RESCUE -BOTS a solution powered by SAP HANA. The problem statement is how to reduce the loss of life in Industrial based Fires. Their solution used a drone to map out the environment and identify potential threats and causalities and send to data to the responding authority. Apart from that the drone would perform facial recognition on a causality and obtain his/her medical data which is sent to the paramedics.

The second idea which peaked my interest was Tiny Steps. This IoT based solution is used to provide real time updates to parents about there toddlers. If a toddler crosses a certain area of territory the parents are given a live update on their mobile device and smart tv. The day ended on a high as the team Rescue-Bots which I was rooting for won the demo jam.

SAP Techniversity was held on 12th March 2015, targeted at undergraduate and graduate students associated with SAP. The highlight of this event was the First Student Meet up in India. During the event we where introduced to various student groups such as Data Geeks, Makers Meet Up ,Aerospace Group etc. The purpose of these groups is to help students to explore different areas through interaction with other students and SAP mentors. Following which we where shown live demo's of applications which use Drones, Google Glass and 3D Printers along with SAP HANA.

After the Techniversity I took part in the Viz-a-thon for Doctors without Borders. Here we used SAP Lumira to visualize the data provided by Doctors without Borders in order to solve a given problem set , for which we finished 3rd.

In all it was very fruitful two days where I was exposed to the Impact and Importance of future technologies such as IoT and Big Data Analytics.
