We are happy to share with you some great impressions of the first workshops which are facilitated within the EU Code Week at SAP's headquarter in Walldorf. Nearly 100 students visited today the first EU Code Week sessions with existing hands-on experience on 3D printing and Arduino coding as well as a great SAP Student MeetUp focusing on Big Data.

“At SAP, we are committed to empowering the next generation with the skillset needed for the digital transformation,” welcomes Dr. Bernd Welz, executive vice president and head of Scale, Enablement & Transformation, SAP SE the students.

At workshops in the d-shop students got the opportunity tapping into Internet of Things with first hands-on experience on 3D printing and Arduino.

Further at the student meet-up we introduced the DataGenius Competition including how to start with SAP Lumira and the SAP HANA Cloud Platform.

The contest urges entrants to “Tell Their Story, Change the World,” by using data analysis. To enter students must choose a topic and then use SAP solutions to analyze the data and create a visualization, dashboard, prediction, or app. Depending on the depth of their entry, all participants will receive swag ranging from a Date Genius t-shirt to a water bottle. All entries will then be evaluated by an expert panel, including Ted Speaker David McCandless, and winners will be chosen. In addition to the existing DataGenius prizes of SAPPHIRE NOW passes and charity donations, University Alliances is offering an exclusive opportunity for students enrolled in any of our member institutions: the University Alliances student with the best entry will win the chance to join the University Alliances team at SAPPHIRE NOW and attend keynotes, assist on the show floor, and network along with other students. For more information on the contest visit the official DataGenius IV website.

Moreover, the movie “The Human Face of Big Data” – which won several film festival prizes - was screened.

About the movie: With the rapid emergence of digital devices, an unstoppable, invisible force is changing human lives in ways from the microscopic to the gargantuan: Big Data, a word that was barely used a few years ago but now governs the day for many of us from the moment we awaken to the extinguishing of the final late-evening light bulb. This massive gathering and analyzing of data in real time is allowing us to not only address some of humanity biggest challenges but is also helping create a new kind of planetary nervous system. Yet as Edward Snowden and the release of the Prism documents have shown, the accessibility of all these data comes at a steep price. The Human Face of Big Data captures the promise and peril of this extraordinary knowledge revolution.

The screening was followed by an lively discussion about today’s big data challenges with

  • Matthias Haendly, VP Platform Product Marketing Platform and Application, SAP SE
  • Mathias Kemeter, Data Scientist | SAP Custom Development
  • Thorsten Henrichs, Big Data Analytics

The Student MeetUp finished with an outlook into SAP Careers presented by our recruiting colleague and some networking.
