Today – October 15th – five special students from Riga visited the SAP Innovation Center Potsdam.
Why special? These five students are the winners of the “Internet of Everything (IoE) Creathon” that took place in the Latvian capital Riga as pre-event of the e-skills for jobs high-level conference in March this year.
The Prize
Emīls, Marta, Serhii, Lauris and Mārtiņš won a trip to Berlin – sponsored by Cisco, SAP and Academy Cube. At their first day in the German capital they visited the SAP Innovation Center. Based on the students educational background as well as their creathon idea the SAP team demoed them their latest projects within medical analytics and research for hospitals and explained the processes of design thinking and product research. After a joint lunch the five winners experience the open space work environment at the SAP Innovation Center and learned about the multiple career opportunities at SAP in consulting, development, sales and pre-sales.
And tonight they will join the opening event of the openBerlin IoE Innovation Center by Cisco.
The IoE Creathon
An IoE Creathon is a hackathon opened to all students, from any background, with all types of competences! It is an event that stimulates creativity and innovation, giving new tools and energy to the participants. The participants last March worked 1,5 days in multi-disciplinary teams and proposed innovative use of technology to enhance public services. The students competed over the question: How will the Internet evolve to change and improve our world? with mentoring and coaching by technology experts from Cisco and SAP.
The winning idea
March’s winning team came up with a solution to a problem that affects thousands of Latvians every year. Specialist medical services – cardiologists and other specialists surgeons – have historically been centralized in Riga. This means that for many people, getting access to the attention they need can be difficult. So how to reduce waiting times and get attention to those who need it?
Our winning Creathoners came up with a simple but stunning idea: A connected and wearable device that collects critical data such as heart rate, temperature, or oxygen saturation. The device – a non-invasive patch with sensors – generates a big picture of the patient’s health. And via IoE technology, the device is smart enough to alert its wearer when they need to see a medical specialist. And surveys the best options in terms of securing the all-important appointment – be it public health appointments with an average waiting time, or the closest private hospital should the need be urgent. eSkills for Jobs 2015, part of the EU eSkills strategy, is a major cross sector, multi-stakeholder campaign from the European Commission, involving more than
650 organisations across Europe including companies, associations, education and training bodies and NGOs. The aim of the campaign is to raise awareness of the need for citizens to improve their command of information and communication technology (ICT) skills for work. The campaign is a response to the growing demand for ICT-skilled professionals which is currently not met, despite high levels of unemployment in Europe. (Source)
