The term Policy encapsulates broad definition of capabilities, requirements and contracts that define and constrain the usability of a service. Policies may apply to single service definitions at different layers of abstraction, as well as to interactions of multiple services and partners.

They are used to define a variety of constraints and capabilities such as service configurations, Qualities of Service, privacy, authentication, accessibility, service level agreements, etc.
