The SAP Global Co-Innovation Lab (COIL) Network hosts and facilitates a broad range of events and activities to foster project based co-innovation, enabling and extend the capabilities of our partners and SAP. Joint achievements of projects are showcased as packaged deliverables to gain broader momentum around their co-innovation and to make the topic more tangible. The following list outlines a high-level perspective for the major projects successfully completed between 2008 and today in the area of infrastructure management.
PoC for End-to-end security with Palo Alto Network and Citrix
with Citrix and Palo Alto Networks [COIL Palo Alto, December 2012]
Customers running critical business applications must contend with a highly mobile workforce accessing an increasingly dense datacenter network. Satisfying the performance requirement while maintaining a well secured environment is paramount. This project built a proof of concept for an end-to-end solution for protecting SAP applications with Palo Alto Networks PA-Series next-generation firewall, and Citrix NetScaler ADC as described in the following logic workflow diagram. Both as COIL members, the two companies built a live system at COIL and validated the key integration features that provide protection to mission critical SAP applications. Findings from this project are provided to joint customers via deployment guides and live workshops.

Running SAP Applications Faster and More Reliably with an Integrated Radware and SAP Solution
with Radware [COIL Palo Alto, September 2012]
SAP collaborates with network technology partners to provide certified network products for SAP use cases. Further, SAP Accelerated Application Delivery (AccAD) product improves the response times of Web applications such as the SAP NetWeaver® Portal and SAP proprietary network protocols used for the SAP GUI client front-end. Radware and SAP have now gone a step further and tested their complementary Radware Alteon and SAP AccAD products together in the SAP Co-Innovation Lab. An integrated Alteon/AccAD product will be provided by Radware to our customers based on an OEM agreement with SAP. This COIL whitepaper provides an overview of the combined solution.
SAP Extended Diagnostics by CA Wily Customer workshops
with CA Technologies Inc. [COIL Palo Alto, September 2012]
SAP Extended Diagnostics by CA Willy (SED) helps our customer identify bottlenecks, eliminate outages, maintain service levels, and lower the cost of maintaining your Web applications. With this project, SAP and CA Technologies worked together at COIL to build a live landscape showcasing both SAP and CA solutions with real customer scenarios. Using this live landscape, the two companies conducted a series of customer workshops to get customers in North America educated with the joint solution.
Radware Alteon and SAP NetWeaver AccAD
with Radware [COIL Palo Alto, December 2011]
SAP NetWeaver Accelerated Application Delivery (AccAD) enables end users worldwide to access web-based SAP applications at near-LAN speed. It is a software appliance which is shipped as a complementary offering to SAP NetWeaver. Deploying AccAD together with another WAN optimization solution can be a compelling combination for optimizing the overall - both SAP and non-SAP - WAN traffic, but can be technically challenging without appropriate guidance. In this project, SAP AccAD solution management group has teamed up with our partner Radware and created a PoC at COIL that demonstrates the compatibility of SAP AccAD and Radware Alteon ADC within the SAP application environment and proves the value gained in terms of end to end performance, availability and security when deploying the joint solution.Citrix Netscaler Certification

HP, Intel, SAP, SUSE (a business unit of The Attachmate Group), and VMware have joined forces at SAP Co-Innovation Lab to build a proof point that proves the technical, operational and business value of running SAP on SLES/VMWare/Intel Xeon 8 processor platforms. Findings from the Proof of Concept showed near-linear scalability for a heavy ERP workload deployed to virtual machines in a three tier configuration running on a single Intel Xeon processor 5600 based physical server. Citrix extends the value of SAP ERP, SAP GUI, SAP NetWeaver Portal and SAP's Enterprise Service-Oriented Architecture (ESOA) through virtualization solutions that enable more people in more locations, on any device or network to enjoy convenient, easy, HQ-fast performance of SAP. In this COIL project, we demonstrate how solutions from both companies are ultilized in the daily life of an SAP business user, implementing a business scenario in end-to-end environment using Citrix products to virtualize the SAP backend system, to connect the business user to end and to allow him to use application delivery and work shifting scenarios on various devices like laptop, tablets or smart phones.Please check out an overview of Citrix and SAP.
Brocade end-to-end solution for a self-tuning SAP BOE landscape
with Brocade and VMWare [COIL Palo Alto, November 2010]
How should you cater to anticipated demand spikes of your business applications? Reserve significant hardware resources and over-provision your infrastructure? You may not have to do that anymore. A portfolio of solutions from Brocade and VMware promise to adapt dynamically to load changes by providing accurate load monitoring and an on-demand resource provisioning service to the application.With this COIL Project, Brocade, SAP, and VMware have jointly performed a POC for running a virtual SAP BOE landscape with Brocade's products which automates on-demand resource provisioning with visibility into application traffic and load level. In the test, Brocade connects to VMware vCenter and performs on-demand provisioning and de-provisioning of virtual machines based on pre-defined performance metrics thresholds.

HP/Systinet SOA governance solution in SAP Discovery System V4
with HP [COIL Palo Alto, November 2010]
This is the phase 1 of a multi-phase project which targets integrating HP SOA Governance featuring Systinet on the SAP Discovery System v4. This phase 1 of the project updates an existing documentation and demo for SAP ESR and HP SOA Systinet interoperability to the SAP Discovery System v4. This project addresses the issue of SOA design time handover to runtime governance, where HP SOA Systinet customers want to integrate SAP into ALM Enterprise governance. It leverages HP and SAP building blocks and will document how an SAP service is born and propagates through the lifecycle, exchange endpoints and meet non SAP services.

SAP Solution Manager / Redwood Software Business Process Operation Validation
with Redwood Software [COIL Tokyo, July 2010]
In cooperation with Redwood Software, Inc, AGS and COIL conducted this project targeting the validation of the scenarios concerning SAP Solution Manager Business Process Operations as well as job scheduling management using SAP CPS by Redwood. This project focused on the value of those scenarios from the SAP user`s perspective with the aim of packaging and showcasing the deliverables to the other SAP users. A total of 26 people from 18 JSUG member companies participated in this project, approximately three months from May to the end of July, 2010.
Intel® Xeon® Processor 7500 series based server - Performance validation on ECC utilizing customer data

This project was intended to prove the superiority of Intel new CPU Intel® Xeon® Processor 7500 series compared with the previous CPU Intel® Xeon® Processor 7400 series under the virtualized environment utilizing customer batch job. With this project, not only in customer batch job, but also in SD workload, we could validate that Nehalem-EX is superior to Dunnington.
HP system copy & SAP TDMS Integration - demo hosting

System copying and troubleshooting production systems can be a time-consuming tasks for customers. Conitinuing from a first phase started in 2009, HP and COIL demonstrated to more customers at COIL how a combined solution with HP System Copy and SAP Test Data Migration Server (TDMS) can be used to automate the process and reduce production system downtime for trouble shooting. The deliverable from the project demonstrates how HP System Copy creates a stable point-in-time snapshot of a production system, and how TDMS uses this snapshot for data extraction to create consistent smaller

Blue Coat in BOE Global Deployment Solution

In global deployments of SAP BOE, network impacts can be significant. Bringing partners as well as SAP BOE colleagues together, a COIL project has studied network impacts on global BOE deployments. In the project, diverse geographies like South Africa, Japan, India were simulated. The project has proven that network impacts on global BE deployments can be strongly reduced by use of the Blue Coat WAN optimization solution across various communication networks, such as DSL, T1, 3G.

Intel SOA Expressway - SOA management POC

Intel is world-famous for many things, and maybe best known for their innovative chipsets. But still to some it may be a surprise that Intel also offers a SOA runtime management solution via its SOA Expressway software appliance. In a joint exercise with SAP's Co-innovation Lab and the Intel SOA Expressway solution team, the combination of the appliance with an SAP SOA landscape was investigated, and key security features offered by this solution successfully validated.

Intel Processors Performance Validation and PoC

Virtualization of enterprise applications is proceeding at a very fast pace. For many organizations SAP applications are critical for running their business successfully, and a stable infrastructure underpins all successful SAP deployments. Performance overhead in virtualizing SAP applications has been a concern for many customers. How well would the newest generation of Intel and VMWare solutions address this challenge?
An end-user case study conducted at SAP's Co-innovation Lab (COIL) in 2009 has brought Intel and VMWare together to find out the answer for SAP customers. Unlike a typical benchmark testing, this study focuses on performance impact of virtualization in real customer environment in both native (=bare metal) and virtualized scenarios. Results would show that the combination of Intel Xeon 5500 (with features like EPT, VPID, Turbo and SMT) and the latest VMware's ESX provides a compelling value proposition for virtualizing SAP without compromising performance.
The findings of the project were presented at VMWorld 2009 and SAP TechEd 2009.
CRM Benchmark Collaboration with SAP

SAP Standard Application Benchmarks help customers and partners find the appropriate hardware configuration for their IT solutions. SAP has developed the SAP Standard Application Benchmarks to test the hardware and database performance of SAP applications and components. Sun is a member of this benchmark community. There are two Standard Benchmarks for SAP Customer Relationship Management (SAP CRM), E-Selling and Interaction Center. The selling benchmark suite consists of two individual benchmarks covering the two SAP Customer Relationship Management (SAP CRM) e-selling scenarios: Business-to-Consumer (B2C) and Business-to-Business (B2B). This suite replaces the online store benchmark.
The focus of this Sun co-innovation lab project was to help provide feedback to the new benchmark suite that focused on consumer behavior. Sun provided the CRM development team with input to the new benchmark kit and provided direction on how to test the new kit on hardware and database resources.
NetApp Green IT Case Studies

NetApp and COIL have jointly released the success story "SAP Co-Innovation Lab Data Center Provisions 'Green' Landscapes with Flexible NetApp solutions".This time the story features COIL as a happy NetApp user. Like with any innovation environment , one main challenge COIL needs to address day to day is to maintain a very high level flexbility and agility so we can provision a SAP landscape that meets particular project requirements in a very short notice and very tight delivery time. NetApp has been a great enabler in our conquer for agility and flexibility in many ways:
Thin provisioning helped us save 80% storage space required for projects; flexclone is a cornerstone of our rapid provisioning process; dedupe helped increase LUN utilization by 2 times.

NetApp & SAP TDMS Integration

There is good news from COIL for those customers who are facing the following challenges:
- Large and quickly growing SAP systems
- The need to test and validate in-house developments
- The challenge to scramble sensitive data
- Multiple parallel IT projects
- Demand to simulate new business scenarios
SAP Test Data Migration Server (TDMS) and NetApp Flexclone each addressed the above challenges to some extend. In this project, NetApp and COIL have shown that "the sum is greater than the parts". Within 3 weeks, the two companies have put together a demo for integrated solutions leveraging SAP TDMS and NetApp Flexclone capability to reduce downtime of customer production landscape for troubleshooting and maintenance needs. SLA management and end-to-end performance monitoring are critical in complex compute environments, particularly if the applications are mission critical. In this project, we show how VMware AppSpeed details application and infrastructure latencies for an integrated SAP Portal and ERP environment. With AppSpeed, the application response times are measured and dissected by application components and virtual machines, so that the administrator can quickly identify potential bottlenecks and address the underlying issues.
Citrix NetScaler and Branch Repeater Certification Update

SOA Management Integration
The COIL Palo Alto team cooperated independently with SAP partners SOA Software and SONOA Systems to evaluate key elements of SOA management.
The focus of the project was two-folded: One hand to design an integration architecture that requires none or minimum change to SAP components and, on the other hand, to validate the performance impact of the SOA management components on the overall SAP landscape.

Book on SOA contract design and versioning

COIL Palo Alto team member and SOA expert Kevin Liu strongly contributed to the Prentice Hall book "Web service Contract Design and Versioning for SOA" which was officially launched during the first International SOA Symposium in Amsterdam on October 13-14, 2008. Pearson calls this 800+ pages book "the Ultimate Guide for Designing and Governing Web Service Contracts".

with SOA Software and Sonoa Systems - [COIL Palo Alto, November 2008]
The COIL Palo Alto team cooperated independently with SAP partners SOA Software and SONOA Systems to evaluate key elements of SOA management. The focus of the project was two-folded: One hand to design an integration architecture that requires none or minimum change to SAP components and, on the other hand, to validate the performance impact of the SOA management components on the overall SAP landscape.

COIL Palo Alto team member and SOA expert Kevin Liu strongly contributed to the Prentice Hall book "Web service Contract Design and Versioning for SOA" which was officially launched during the first International SOA Symposium in Amsterdam on October 13-14, 2008. Pearson calls this 800+ pages book "the Ultimate Guide for Designing and Governing Web Service Contracts".
