EU Second nanomaterial regulatory review calls for case-by-case approach
Companies involved in the manufacture, use or placing on the market of nanomaterials can find in the second regulatory review on nanomaterials measures foreseen by the European Commission to address nanomaterials. The second regulatory review announces the revision of Annexes to the REACH Regulation to introduce provisions specific to nanomaterials as well as the review of occupational health and safety legislation in 2014 to address occupational exposure to nanomaterials. The second regulatory review also dismisses the prospect of a register of all nanoproducts, but foresees the development of a web platform containing information sources for nanomaterials. A staff working document issued concomitantly provides a list of types and uses of nanomaterials falling in and out of the scope of the EU definition.

The second regulatory review on nanomaterials issued in October 2012 updates the first regulatory review for nanomaterials of 17 June 2008. It addresses the concerns addressed in 2009 by the European Parliament on the first regulatory review as well as the 2010 call by the European Council on the need to develop specific risk management measures for nanomaterials.
