Revert back Planning for MaxDB Upgrade

This Document is useful for the project, who work on MaxDB database and wants to upgrade the Database with revert back plan in hand.

You will find the Upgrade document everywhere (SMP) but you could not find the back out plan for MaxDB upgrade. It means, if you want to revert back to older version due to some problem in new version.

I am assuming that you are champ in MaxDB and can perform the task DB upgrade.

<< Keep in mind, YOU MUST have backup of OLDER version, new version database backup will not work in older version>>

There are 2 ways to go back to older version after reaching to new version.

  1. After reaching to new version, if you want to reach to older version, you have to Un-install the MaxDB software from the system and reinstall old version of MaxDB and perform Restore. This is a tedious and risky work.
  2. 2nd option is bit easy than the point 1st.

Here we will learn the back out plan step by step for step 2:

  1. Before starting Actual upgrade work, please take “Backup of Registry”
  2. Start àRun àregedit
  3. File à Export à”Path where you want to store the exported file” à File Name (Example 7.8.2.23 Registry) à Save

  1. STOP MaxDB database

  1. Take a Backup of Database.

  1. Take a backup of “SAPDB” folder completely.

F:/sapdb

  1. Note down the version of your current MaxDB database.

Example: Version 7.8.023

  1. Suppose you have reached to new version 7.8.02.30 Now after upgrade.

At this Point, You have decided to come back to your older version.

  1. STOP MaxDB database

  1. Replace the SAPDB Directory which you have backed up in step 4.

  1. Import the Registry file, which is exported in step 1. Steps are somehow same.

  1. Here if you will TRY to start the database, it will give you Error like below

  1. To resolve this problem, you have to restore and recover database with the help of database backup, which is taken in step 3.

  1. Once you click on “Restart” Button, Your database will start working with patch version 7.8.02.23 (Means you’re older database version)

All Done – Well Done
