The purpose of this document is to list the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) regarding SAP BusinessObjects Desktop Intelligence (DeskI) and Desktop Intelligence Compatibility Pack (DCP)

 

INSTALLATION

 

  • What version of Desktop Intelligence will users have to be on to use DCP?
    • DCP is delivered in SBOP Enterprise Client Tools XI 3.1 FixPack 6.1 or later, which is installed over SBOP ENTERPRISE SERVER XI 3.1 SP6
    • Hence, Users have to be on DeskI 3.1 Service Pack 6

IMP: It is recommended to use the latest SBOP Enterprise Client Tools XI 3.1 FixPack

  • Do I need to Upgrade my SBOP ENTERPRISE SERVER XI 3.1 to SP6 or later use DCP?
    • DCP enables Desktop Intelligence Desktop Client to connect to a SAP Business Intelligence (BI) 4.1 Platform
    • Hence, Only the DeskI Desktop Client needs to be upgraded
    • But if you plan to use the DeskI Desktop Client with a SBOP ENTERPRISE SERVER XI 3.1, SAP recommends the server and client to be at the same patch level
  • I am a DeskI user on SAP BusinessObjects Enterprise XIR2, how do i use DCP
    • You will need to upgrade your server to BI 4.1 and
    • Your DeskI Desktop Client to DeskI 3.1 SP6 and then apply FP 6.1 or later (Please apply the latest SBOP Enterprise Client Tools XI 3.1 FixPack)
  • Can I continue to use my DeskI Desktop Client with SAP BOE 3.1 server
    • DeskI 3.1 will continue to work with SAP BOE 3.1 servers
    • SAP recommends that the Desktop Clients and Servers be at the same patch levels for best results.
  • What are the system requirements for DCP
  • Is there a Sequence in which the Client installation is done?
    • Yes, the sequence is mentioned below
      1. Install SBOP Enterprise Clients 3.1 Service Pack 6
      2. Install SAP BI 4.1 Clients
        1. Side-By-Side
        2. Mandatory components to be installed
          1. Web Intelligence Rich Client
          2. Report Conversion Tool
      3. Install SBOP Enterprise Client Tools XI 3.1 FixPack 6.1 or later (Please apply the latest SBOP Enterprise Client Tools XI 3.1 FixPack)
        1. IMPORTANT
          1. XI 3.1 FixPack should be installed AFTER BI 4.1 Client Installation
          2. If you are upgrading from SBOP Enterprise Client Tools XI 3.1 FixPack 6.1 to 6.2, then please refer to SAP NOTE: 1903183
    • You can refer to the SAP NOTE: 1896617, for a sample script on how to create a slient installer, this can be customised as per requirements.

 

CONNECTING DESKI DESKTOP CLIENT with DCP to BI 4.1

 

  • Will DCP connect in 2-tier and 3-tier (ZABO) Mode to SAP BI 4.1 Repository?
    • Yes, DCP supports both the 2-tier and 3-tier modes
    • Connecting in 2-tier is the same as SBOP Enterprise Client Tools XI 3.1, there is a difference in connecting in 3-tier mode, as explained below
  • How do users connect to SAP BI 4.1 in 3-tier mode using DCP
    • On the Windows Desktop where the users have the Clients installed, users will have to manually copy the <Server-Name>.extranet file
      • From
        • "C:\Users\<User>\Documents\My SAP BusinessObjects Documents\LocData"
      • To
        • "C:\Users\<User>\Documents\My Business Objects Documents\LocData"
  • How do is the <Server-Name>.extranet generated?
    • On the Windows Desktop where you have DCP installed
    • In SAP BI Launchpad, set the Preferences for Web Intelligence as "Desktop (Rich Client, Windows only, installation required)" for either View or Modify
      • If you have set View to Desktop, then open a Web Intelligence Report, or
      • If you have set modify to Desktop, then Create a New Web Intelligence Document
    • After the Web Intelligence Rich Client has opened, you will find the <Server-Name>.extranet in the "C:\Users\<User>\Documents\My SAP BusinessObjects Documents\LocData" location
  • Will Users be still be able to connect to SBOP Enterprise 3.1
    • Yes, DCP doesn't impact the way DeskI 3.1 works with SBOP Enterprise 3.1
    • If you use DeskI SDK script, please refer to SAP NOTE: 1896616

 

USING DESKI DESKTOP CLIENT with BI 4.1

  • Are there any changes in functionality when using DCP
    • Except for Scheduling, DeskI Desktop Client with DCP is expected to have the same behavior and functional capabillities of DeskI 3.1
    • Scheduling when connected to BI 4.1 is executed on the Users windows desktop instead on the server.
  • Are there any known limitations when using DCP
    • When the user is connected to a BI 4.1, Login As to a SBOP Enterprise 3.1 Server will not work due to limitations
    • The user will have to Exit DeskI client and login to the SBOP Enterprise 3.1 Server
  • Starting DeskI in ZABO/3-tier mode from BI Launchpad
    • Opening DeskI Desktop Client in 3-tier/ZABO mode from BI Launchpad is NOT supported
  • Starting DeskI in ZABO/3-tier mode from 3.1 Infoview when BI 4.1 Clients are installed side-by-side
    • When BI 4.1 Clients is installed side by side to 3.1 Clients, Opening DeskI 3.1 from Infoview will not work
    • This is due to the reason that the registry is updated by the last desktop client installed in this case BI 4.1 Desktop Clien
  • Running Macros with 3.1 CMS when DCP is installed
    • If you use DeskI SDK script, please refer to SAP NOTE: 1896616

 

 

SCHEDULING WITH DCP

  • How do user schedule DeskI documents when connected to BI 4.1 using DCP
    • DCP will schedule documents to the local windows Scheduler
    • Users can monitor the "Task Scheduler" to view and manage the DeskI Schedules
    • DeskI Schedules will be created in a sub-folder "SAP BusinessObjects" under "Task Scheduler Library"
  • In what mode will the Schedule Run
    • Schedules created by the user when connected to BI 4.1 in 2-tier mode, will run in 2-tier mode
    • Schedules created by the user when connected to BI 4.1 in 3-tier mode, will run in 3-tier mode
  • How Can I Create a Schedule using DCP
    • Schedules can be created during the "IMPORT FROM REPOSITORY" or "EXPORT TO REPOSITORY"
    • Set the Format, Destination etc as required and the job will be created locally
    • For Export workflow, you will need to complete the export workflow
    • In the IMPORT Workflow, you do not need to IMPORT the document to create the Schedule locally
  • Can I Schedule Multiple Documents in a Single workflow:
    • You can do so with the Export Workflow and NOT with the IMPORT Workflow
  • Can I Schedule multiple DeskI documents to run at the same time.
    • Yes, You can.
    • NOTE: Ensure that the same document doesnt have overlapping schedules on the same machine.
  • Where do I see the Scheduled DeskI Documents?
    • DCP used the Windows TASK SCHEDULER for scheduling of DeskI documents.
    • The User can see the Scheduled documents and its details in the Task Scheduler on the Windows machine where the user created them.
  • Where can the user get execution details of DCP based Schedules.
    • All DCP based DeskI Schedules can be viewed in the Windows Event Viewer, Application: BusinessObjects_businessobjects
    • You can create a CUSTOM VIEW in Windows event viewer and monitor the above application
  • Will DeskI Schedule execute when the user has logged off the system
    • Yes, provided the user has provided the user credentials for the job to execute.
    • To do this, the user will have to go the job in Task Scheduler and in the Properties of the Job, in the General Tab, set the option "Run whether user is logged on or not" and provide the relevant user credentials
  • How can I Schedule DeskI documents based on Events (Event Based Schedule)
    • Refer to the document here on how to create event based scheduling for DeskI documents using DCP
  • Are there any limitations users have to be aware about Scheduling
    • Schedules will fail, if the document which will be refreshed when the schedule runs is already open on the same Windows Desktop.
    • HTML output supports Destination File Location, similar to SBOP Enterprise 3.1
