Note: For an updated version covering SAP Landscape Management see the following blogpost NetApp integration with SAP Landscape Management.

NetApp integration with SAP Landscape Virtualization Management

Compatibility Overview

A host, on which a SAP system will run, is referred to as a "managed node". This is SAP terminology, as SAP LVM is management tool that manages nodes.

The following OS / Protocol combinations for managed nodes are currently supported by the NetApp integration into SAP LVM:

Operating System NFS iSCSI FCP
AIX, Solaris, HP-UX X
SLES 10/11, RHEL 5/6 X X* X*
Windows 2008/R2 X X*

* Not yet validated by NetApp

The following SAP LVM use cases are supported by all the above OS/Protocol combinations:

  • SAP System Start/Stop/Relocate

  • SAP System Clone/Copy/Refresh

NetApp Storage Services Connector for SAP LVM Compatibility

NetApp Storage Services Connector for SAP LVM (SSC) is the central component that enables the integration of NetApp into SAP LVM. SAP LVM will talk to SSC in order to gather important information about the storage controllers, and will also create clones and SnapMirror replications in order to execute the SAP System Clone/Copy/Refresh use-cases in a space and time-efficient fashion.

SSC v3.0

New features in version 3.0:

  • Clustered Data ONTAP support

  • Clone from Secondary

  • SnapMirror label support

  • New Storage Adapter

Supported Data ONTAP® version:

  • Clustered Data ONTAP® 8.2 and higher

Requirements:

  • SLES 10/11 or RHEL 5/6

  • JRE 7 Update 21 or greater

Supported SAP LVM versions:

  • SAP LVM 2.0

  • SAP LVM 2.1

SSC v2.1

Supported Data ONTAP version:

  • Data ONTAP® 7 mode, 7.3.0 or higher.

Requirements:

  • SLES 10/11 or RHEL 5/6

  • JRE 6 Update 18 or greater

Supported SAP LVM versions:

  • SAP LVM 1.0

  • SAP LVM 2.0

  • SAP LVM 2.1

As outlined, SSC only runs on Linux. However, since it is a central component, it is also able to leverage managed nodes running on Windows or UNIX. This means in a Windows environment, you can still use the NetApp integration into SAP LVM. To do so, you need to install SSC on a Linux host (e.g. a VM) and connect it to SAP LVM and add your managed nodes into SAP LVM and perform the SAP System Clone/Copy/Refresh operations.

NFS Support

For SAP LVM to manage nodes running on Linux/Unix with NFS, you only need to have one central installation of NetApp Storage Services Connector for SAP LVM (SSC). This enables all Linux/Unix NFS SAP systems on these nodes to support the SAP System Clone/Copy/Refresh use-cases.

iSCSI/FCP Support

For SAP LVM to manage nodes running on Windows/Linux with iSCSI or FCP, you need to install the following components on the managed nodes:

  • NetApp Storage Library for SAP LVM (Windows or Linux version)

  • NetApp SnapDrive for Windows / Unix

The Storage Library will allow SAP LVM to automatically leverage the functionality provided by SnapDrive.

You still need one central installation of NetApp Storage Services Connector for SAP LVM, even when only using iSCSI/FCP and not NFS.
