In order to get Information Steward installed, you first have to install Information Platform Services (IPS).
I have already posted the question "Obtaining IPS - where can I download IPS from?" which documented my journey trying to find the installer for IPS.
This document outlines how to run the installer. Review the following steps before you begin.
Download the correct installer program
filename "51043633.ZIP" also known as "SBOP INFORMATION PLATFORM SERVICES 4.0 SP04 WINDOWS (64B)"
Navigate to the folder where the installation programs are
SBOPS_IPS_win
Run InstallIPS (do NOT run Setup).
If you run setup, you will be prompted to enter a license key - good luck with that! If you run InstallIPS then the license key will automatically be pre-populated for you (as shown below). They you will be good to go.
Accept all the default values
Sure, you can customise the installation if you know exactly what you are doing! But if this is your first time installing, I recommend accepting what the installer suggests.
Type in passwords when you are prompted. WRITE THEM DOWN IN A SAFE PLACE!
You are going to be asked for five passwords: for the CMS Administrator, for the Cluster Key, for the SQL 2008 Administrator, for the SQL 2008 User, for the Subversion Repository. Keep a written record of them, or you will not be able to make changes to configuration after you finish installing.
Be patient!
After you have given the installation wizard all the answers, you will need to sit back and let it do it's magic. It can take 30 minutes (longer on a slow server), so go do something else and check on the installation progress every 10 minutes or so.
Windows 2012 problems?
If you are running Windows 2012, you are going to find that there is a problem running SQL 2008 Express (installed by IPS). SQL 2008 is not compatible with Windows 2012 until you enable .NET 3.51 on your server. To do this, follow this link http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2681562 or do some Googling
OK, I got IPS installed. Am I done?
No, you're not. There are a lot of patches to IPS. A lot. I have done a little searching on SCN, and taken some hints from more experienced users, and they recommend patching to SP04 as a starting point. So go ahead and do that - download the SP04 patch
Go to the SAP Support Portal and navigate to "Support Packages and Patches - D", through SAP Data Services, through "SBOP INFORMATION PLAT SVCS 4.0" and finally through "Windows on x64 64bit"
You will see over sixty files to choose from. You want to choose a file with a Service Pack N having patch level 0 that is dated LATER than the baseline IPS you just installed. So if your IPS installation was dated 04.06.2013, then you need to choose a patch that is dated after that. For instance, Service Pack 7 is dated 02.08.2013, so choose that.

I might note at this juncture that downloading via SAP Download manager may be slower, but it is more reliable than an HTTP download. The patches are large files (half-Gigabyte to over a Gigabyte) and so they take a long time to complete. I downloaded a number of these files via HTTP only to discover during installation that they were incomplete or corrupt. Lesson? Use SAP Download Manager so you only download a file once!
