In order to access and manage partitions on Sybase IQ from BW, SAP provides the program “RSDA_SYB_PARTITION_MONITOR” which is the “Partition Monitor for Nearline Table in Sybase IQ”. This report provides a detailed overview of all Nearline Tables in Sybase IQ and the corresponding partitions for each table.

You can start the report via transaction code: SE38. The only required input parameter is the name of the Near-Line connection. In our example, this is “CIANLS”. In addition the name of the data table on Sybase IQ can be selected.

Since the number of partitions for a data table on Sybase IQ is limited to 1024, the program allows users to define threshold values in order to create alerts and monitor all critical tables which exceed the upper threshold value. In this case the report can be also used to drop or/and merge the individual partitions.

This report can be executed in various “run modes” which allow to:
• Check Partitions
• Drop Partition (no Merge)
• Merge Partitions (no Drop)
• Drop and Merge Partitions

The report can be run either in simulation mode or in “real” mode. Additionally, it provides comprehensive log information when needed.

Example:
In this example there are three archiving requests for data target YSHNLS.

After executing the report a list of all selected Nearline Tables in Sybase IQ is shown.

When a DAP request is executed on BW side a dedicated partition for the table corresponding to the data target is created on Sybase IQ.  The column “Partitions” shows the total number of partitions for each table.

In the next step, a table name can be selected and by double clicking the selected line, detailed information about the partitions is provided.

In order to merge partitions you can either select partitions to be merged or create system proposal using the “Merge” button.

Before the Drop/Merge option is executed you have to confirm the operation.

The next pop-up screen shows a brief Log Display of the steps executed.

The final status of the partitions for table is shown below:

In order to delete a partition, first you have to mark an archiving request for deletion in BW and then drop the corresponding partition on Sybase IQ.

Select the request to be deleted in BW first.

Double click the selected line and flag “NearLine Request löschen” (löschen means delete) on the subsequent screen.

After this step, the NLS request is marked for deletion (trash bin icon), but the corresponding request on Sybase IQ is not physically deleted yet.

By running the monitoring program you can check the status of the corresponding partition(s):

The partitions which contain several requests after a merge operation can’t be deleted unless the Min. and Max. requests status equals 8 ( =Invalidated).

The next pictures shows the final status of the partitions after “Drop/Merge”

Remark: Depending on the scenario you can recover the data from the archive first and drop the partition in the next step.
