SAP Apparel and Footwear (SAP AFS) is a highly integrated and comprehensive solution developed by SAP and industry leaders to address the particular needs of today’s and tomorrow’s apparel and footwear industry.  So many new features and functionalities introduced with AFS to make it comprehensive. In this document we will look in to a new feature called Fabric Content Code (FCC) introduced by SAP to manage materials in apparel and footwear industry.

What is material composition?

The make of the material is described by its composition. It consists with various components.

Eg: For fabrics there can be many components. Cotton, polyester, rayon, nylon and spandex are some of them in apparel industry. The material is made by mixing one or more components under different percentages.  This is called the ‘material composition’.

100% COTTON

50%POLYESTER  50%NYLONE

50%POLYESTER  25%RAYON 20%NYLON  5%SPANDEX

The material composition has to be maintained along with the material master data. In the description field also we can maintain this attribute. But it is not advisable and not a good practice. Therefore we can utilize a new field introduced with SAP AFS to maintain the material composition under basic data 2 in material master.

Maintaining the Fabric Content Code(FCC) is a configuration.

Configuration path:

Logistics – General-> Material Master-> AFS Fields in Material Master for User-Defined Use-> Define Fabric Content Codes

There are three steps to follow to create a FCC.

1. Maintain the fabrics that make up your material

Select Maintain fabrics and click on New entries. Here you have to define all the fabric components. Fabric code can be alpha numeric and up to 3(char) length. Type the description for the defined code.

2. Maintain fabric content code

Here you can define a code for the material based on its make. Length of the FCC is 5(char) and need to provide the description accordingly. I suggest you to follow your own standard when creating FCCs. eg:  All the materials with cotton as their major components can define as CTxxx. PLxxx  for the materials having polyester as their major part etc.

CT001 – 100% Cotton

CT002 - 67%COTTON  33%POLYESTER

      CT003 - 62%COTTON 23%POLYESTER  15%RAYON

      PL001 - 100%POLYESTER

      PL002 - 95%POLYESTER  4%SPANDEX 1%RAYON

3. Assign the FCC to the fabrics

Enter for each fabric percentage in the fabric content. By assigning sequence numbers you can decide in which sequence the fabrics should be displayed when using the codes in the material master.

Save after maintaining all the entries.

Advantages:  If several materials in your company have the same fabric content, you can use the same FCC for all of them. This will help you in reporting as well, specially if you are having SAP BI.

Once the configuration is completed, we can see the defined FCCs under the above mentioned field in basic data 2. Now you can have the material composition in well-organized manner ; no need to maintain the same in material description any more.
