Planning Area groups planning characteristics and key figures and helps in defining the scope of planning. In Demand Planning (DP), we can define new characteristics as per business requirement but planning area that is used for SNP can only contain the standard SNP characteristics.

In SNP, SAP provides list of standard planning areas like 9ASNP02, 9ASNP03, 9ASNP04 etc. As per business requirement, one can create a custom planning area and thereby planning books/data views based on that for subsequent planning activities.

This document will give an overview of the planning area and planning book/data view configuration for Supply Network Planning (SNP).

Step 1: Create New SNP Planning Area

Transaction - /SAPAPO/MSDP_ADMIN

Navigation - Supply Network Planning > Environment > Current Settings >Administration of Demand Planning and Supply Network Planning

9ASNP02 is a Standard planning area without time series. If we want to store own time series key figure in SNP then we can copy the standard SNP Planning Area 9ASNP02 and then add required time series key figure to it.

Here we select the planning Area 9ASNP02 – select copy and give the name of our planning area in “To Planning Area”. This step will create the new planning area and it will be in inactive status initially.

Step 2: Create Time Bucket Profile

Transaction - /SAPAPO/TR30

Navigation - Supply Network Planning > Environment > Current Settings > Maintain Time Bucket Profiles for Demand Planning and Supply Network Planning

Time bucket profile basically helps in defining the periodicities that will be used in planning. This is further assigned to Planning Book/Data View

Step 3A> Create Planning Book

Transaction - /SAPAPO/SDP8B

Navigation - Demand Planning > Environment > Current Settings > Define Planning Book

The planning book is always based on a unique planning area that specifies characteristics and key figures. The planning book defines a pre-selection of characteristics and key figures of the planning area that can be used in the data views.

Here we will copy the standard planning book “9ASNP94” with view “SNP94 (1)”. Initially the new planning book will refer to the standard delivered planning area “9ASNP02” and thus we have to change this assignment consequently.

On creation, will get a message that copies macros are deactivated – so we need to manually activate them

In the Data View Tab – modify name of Custom data view which was created and assign the Time Bucket profile created in previous step.

The default start of the planning horizon is the current day. We can move the start by entering a fixed date or by shifting

After this, click on Complete button and planning book/data view is succesfully created.

Step 3B> Macro Activation

Transaction - /SAPAPO/ADVM

Navigation - Demand Planning > Environment > Current Settings > Macro Workbench

Select the planning book view which has been created and Press the <Generate Macros (Shift + F2)> pushbutton.

Step 3C> Linking Planning Area to Planning Book

Steps to be followed here –

  • In SE11, go to table /SAPAPO/PBMVW. This is the table which defines Relationship between planning area and planning book
  • In the field “MVIEW”, we need to enter the newly created planning book
  • Change the “PAREANAME” from 9ASNP02 to the name of our own planning area
  • Save the changes and exit

Now we can see that the planning book created is assigned to the custom planning area and not the standard SAP planning area

Step 4: Creation of Time Stream

Navigation - Supply Network Planning > Environment > Current Settings > Maintain Planning Calendar (Time Stream)

This time stream will be linked to all locations as production, storage location, and production calendars. This time stream will also be used to assign it to Storage Bucket profile which will be subsequently used in planning area.

Please note that the horizon for the Time Stream should not be smaller than the Storage Bucket Profile.

Step 5: Creation of Storage Bucket Profile

Transaction -> /SAPAPO/TR32

Navigation - Supply Network Planning > Environment > Current Settings > Periodicities for Planning Area

Storage Bucket profile helps in defining how the data would be saved in Live cache.

Note - If the planning area we are using is purely an order planning area, the storage buckets profile does not come into play

Step 6: Assign Storage Bucket Profile to Planning Area and Initialize Planning Area

Transaction - /SAPAPO/MSDP_ADMIN

Navigation - Supply Network Planning > Environment > Current Settings >Administration of Demand Planning and Supply Network Planning

The newly created planning area needs to be linked to a planning version before it can be used. We can either assign the planning area to Active Version (000) or any other test/simulation version also as per requirement.

From above, we can see the planning area is succesfully initialized (Green) and subsequently other master objects and planning activities can be carried out.

In Interactive planning book, we can see the Key figures assigned to New Created Planning Book with defined time buckets.

Note – For subsequent planning activities and as per business requirement, multiple data views can be created with required key figures. Also, new time series key figures can be created such as calculations or delete existing key figures that are not required from the planning area and planning book.
