Evaluation Paths

We know that the SAP solution for Human Resources is hardly based on objects eg. Person is P, Applicant AP, Org. Unit O, Position S, and so on.

We also know that to work, SAP developed links between these objects that you can maintain at 1001 infotype. This bound is composed by two variables called rsign and relat.

Rsign:

Is a variable that defines the direction of this bound composed for two values ‘A’ and ‘B’. To explain better, imagine a road where you have cars going down the road and coming up. So, to the SAP you must have the two directions between two objects for that can be correctly linked.

EG:

O↔S A003 and B003

S↔P A008 and B008

Relat:

Is a variable that identifies the type of the link. Imagine the same road but now we also have a guard who decides which type of car can pass or not. In our example above, the relat corresponds at the numbers.

This concept is very important because are these links that allow us to set our structural profile to down or climb our organizational structure to set who a manager can see and who not. In addition, this is the core of understand how an evaluation path works.

Therefore, the objects used determines the evaluation path. EG: If you have one organizational unit ‘O’ and you want to find all the positions ‘S’ linked with this O object, you must use the evaluation path B003. If you are starting for one position and wants to reach the organizational unit then you must use A003 as your evaluation path.

You won´t find the explanation of all the evaluation paths in this document but you will find some tips to help you understand them.

  • Start by understanding the simple ones like O and S, S and P, C and S, JF and C and so on.
  • After that start to observe the more complexes eval. Paths given by SAP as standard in the IMG Personnel Administration>Organizational Administration>Global Settings>Maintain Evaluation Path. You will realize that all the complexes evaluation paths are nothing more than a group of simple eval. Paths working together.

Objects on SAP HCM.

This will be a short explanation about objects because the objective is not to show and explain each object existing on SAP HCM but to give one important tip.

Before you start to configure any kind of structural authorizations, you must be aware that by activating the structural authorization you will need to consider ALL the objects existing on SAP HCM.

Therefore, you must always do a research of the objects in use and take note of them.

This is needed because once you activate structural authorizations it is not possible to determine whether the objects will pass through the structural authorization and whether won´t.

Of course, you can determine that everyone can see some objects and other objects will respect a specific rule. But same yet, all the objects will pass through the structural authorization and once you forget some, it will not be seen by anyone that uses your structural profile.
